Mark, Chapter 5:21-24,
35-43 Jairus Daughter December 9, 2017
Jesus just finished performing the miracle of removing the legion
of demons from a man and what Jesus did was quickly spreading through the
people. Now even now a greater miracle will be performed and to test the faith
of the disciples.
Jairus, a ruler of a Galilee
synagogue, had asked Jesus to heal his 12-year-old daughter, who in Mark's and Luke's accounts
was dying, and in Matthew said she had already died.
But Jairus had faith that Jesus
was ABLE to heal his daughter. Jairus went to Jesus, because Jairus was sure that Jesus had power over
sickness. Is this an example for the
disciples and for us.
This miracle Jesus performed in raising Jairus daughter from the dead marked the beginning of the end for Jesus, the authorities
was watching Jesus closely and want Him removed from the picture.
Mark 5:21 Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other
side, a great multitude gathered to
Him; and He was by the sea.
Here we find
Jesus sailed back to Capernaum, which is Jesus home city and what did He find,
a large group of people waiting for Him.
*Matthew 9:1 So He
got into a boat, crossed over, and came
to His own city.
*Luke 8:40 So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him.
These individuals
who were waiting had seen the great miracles Jesus had done. We notice Jesus travel by boat a lot.
Mark 5:22 And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue
came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet.
Mark just
told us not all the
rulers were against Jesus. We find Jairus
fell at Jesus feet and worshiped Him.
Interesting, we do not see the disciples doing this at this time. Too close to Jesus.
Was Jairus one of
those waiting on shore for Jesus to return.
Jesus was speaking to the people when Jairus came to Him
*Luke 8:41-42
Just then a synagogue leader by the name of Jairus arrived. He fell at Jesus' feet and kept begging him to come to his home,
(42) because his only daughter, who
was about twelve years old, was dying. While Jesus was on his way, the crowds
continued to press in on him. (would I
give up my pride for my children)
What will we do
for our children. Jairus have not learn
by now, Jesus could say the word and heal her.
Mark 5:23 and begged Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter lies at
the point of death. Come and lay
Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live."
Interesting:
lay hands on her, well known throughout the Scriptures. We are told when we are sick, James tells us.
*James 5:14 Is anyone among
you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over
him, anointing him with oil in the name
of the Lord.
(anointing requires lay hands on them)
I like the
way Mark wrote, my little daughter, show love for daughter.
We see when
Jairus left home, their daughter was still alive, but Matthew wrote that Jairus
daughter just died: His wife sent word that their daughter died.
*Matthew 9:18-19 While Jesus was telling them
these things, an official came up and fell down before him. "My daughter has just died," he
said. "But come and lay your hand
on her, and she will live." (19) So Jesus got up and followed him, along with his disciples.
You notice, Jairus
believed that Jesus had to actually touch his only ill daughter before she could be healed. We know
Jesus could just say the word and she would be healed. Yet Jairus faith was unshakable believing
Jesus could healed her.
*Luke 8:42 for he had
an only daughter about twelve years
of age, and she was dying. But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him.
According to Jewish
faith, a daughter, till she had
completed her twelfth year, was called “little,” or “a little maid”; after
that, “a young woman.” We know
what the daughter mother was going through.
Just think for a minute, this person was a
ruler of the synagogue. It could not be easy for Jairus
to come to Jesus publicly and ask for His help. This was a gutsy and loving move: it would jeopardize his standing among the Jewish leadership. He was desperate, because his only daughter was
dying.
We all are at a point of death and all die on time. It almost always comes as a surprise;
as an interruption in our
lives. None of us are ready, not
really.
Mark 5:24 So Jesus went with
him, and a great multitude followed Him
and thronged Him.
See in your mind’s eye this large crowd as
Jairus takes Jesus to where his daughter is dying and they crowded and pressing
Jesus from all sides so much that he could
hardly move because of the people, or
even to breathe. It was hard to move in the street to the
rulers house. They wanted to see a
miracle to be performed.
Jesus is always ready to respond to us; He will already
be on His way
into our own experiences when we call upon Him.
Jesus Heals a Woman with the issue of blood in these next few verses.
Mark 5:35 While He was still speaking,
some came from the ruler of the synagogue's house who said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?"
This is terrible
news, Heart breaking news about His daughter being dead.
Now
is the next big test for the disciples and the people. They knew now the child
is beyond help and Jesus could have cured her illness, but cannot raise her from the dead. This would be a first time.
*Luke 8:49 While He was still speaking, someone came from the
ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, "Your daughter is dead. Do
not trouble the Teacher."
Mark 5:36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler
of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid; only
believe."
Remember,
Jesus had been delayed on the way to Jairus’ home. I can’t even imagine the
pain that gripped Jairus’ heart when he heard the news that it was too
late. It was in this moment that
Jairus had to make a decision. When
we are the weakest in our lives, we also have to make decisions in our lives.
Think about this. Jesus said to only believe, would
he believe that Jesus had power over death?
Jairus
trusted Jesus and continued walking with Him towards his home. Jairus had seen
Jesus heal; now he and the disciples would see greater things.
This is an example it still takes faith on
our part. Jesus finds everyday a new way
to ask us, do we trust Him. Sometimes in
little way and sometimes in big ways.
God is looking for our reliance on Him.
Not reliance on ourselves.
*Luke 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying,
"Do not be afraid; only believe, and she
will be made well."
*Matthew 9:23-24 When Jesus came to the
official's house and saw the flute
players and the crowd making a
commotion, (24) he said, "Go away! The young lady hasn't died but is
sleeping." But they ridiculed him
with laughter.
Mark 5:37 And He
permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of
James.
This is the first
instance of this inner circle of three
Apostles seen and recorded as the same three that saw him transfigured, and
in the agony of Garden.
Jesus only
allowed the parents and the three apostles to enter the house of the ruler.
*Luke 8:51 When He came into
the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James, and John, and the
father and mother of the girl. (notice
the mother was there)
Mark 5:38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader,
Jesus saw mass confusion. People
were crying and sobbing loudly.
At a Jewish
funeral there are paid professional mourners at the funeral.
What Jesus and
Jairus found was paid professional mourners.
They are already started their procedures. They are making mournful sounds; howling for
the dead, the mourning women, who sang sad songs, played sad tunes on musical
instruments, and made hideous noises, being hired for this purpose. Nothing but
mass confusion.
Interesting,
already there, it takes time and planning for them. Paid?
The prophet
Jeremiah wrote about these professional mourners.
Jeremiah 9:17-18 This is what the
LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "Think about what I'm saying! Indeed, call out the professional mourners!
Send for the best of them to come. (18) Let them hurry and lament for us. Let
tears run down from our eyes, and let our eyelids flow with water.
This includes
their friends, neighbors, and acquaintance, expressing their concern by words
and gestures.
*Matthew 9:23-24 When Jesus came to the
official's house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,
(24) he said, "Go away! The young
lady hasn't died but is sleeping." But they ridiculed him with laughter.
*Luke 8:52 Now everyone was crying and
wailing for her. But Jesus said, "Stop crying! She's not dead. She's
sleeping."
We can see today
through the media and Hollywood how they ridicule Jesus through Christians and
directly to Jesus.
Mark 5:39 When He (Jesus) came in, He
said to them, "Why make this
commotion and weep? The child is not
dead, but sleeping."
Jesus left
the outside people and went into the house and found more mourners. Jesus then
put then all outside the house.
We find the
child was truly dead
in the eyes of the world, but not so as to remain under the power of death: she
was like a person in a sleep, who would in a little time be awaked out of it:
and which was as easily performed by Jesus, as if she had been only in a
natural sleep.
For the
believer, death
is only period
during which the body sleeps
awaiting resurrection
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 But I do not want you to be
ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as
others who have no hope.
(14) For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. (15) For this we say
to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the
coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.
(16) For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven
with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And
the dead in Christ will rise first. (17) Then we who are alive and remain shall
be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And
thus we shall always be with the Lord. (18) Therefore comfort one another with
these words.
1 Corinthians 15:50-58 Now this I say, brethren,
that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption
inherit incorruption. (51) Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all
sleep, but we shall all be changed-- (52) in a moment, in the twinkling of an
eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be
raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (53) For this corruptible must
put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. (54) So when this
corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality,
then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "DEATH IS
SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY."
(55) "O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING? O HADES,
WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY?" (56) The sting of death is sin, and the strength
of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through
our Lord Jesus Christ. (58) Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast,
immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is
not in vain in the Lord.
Mark 5:40
And
they laughed him to scorn. But when
he had put them all out, he took the
father and the mother of the child, and those who were with him, and entered in
where the child was lying.
*Luke 8:53 And they laughed him to
scorn, knowing that she was dead.
There are no degrees of death. It is digital.
There is no dead, deader, deadest.
We do not have the power to bring someone who is really dead back to
life. We are either dead or alive.
Sickens us
to see people laugh at Jesus.
Took
the father and the mother
plus Apostles - Peter, and James, and John.
Mark 5:41 Then He took the child by the hand, and said
to her, "Talitha, cumi," which is translated, "Little girl, I
say to you, arise."
***Key Verse: the Main Point: Jesus has power over sickness and death.**
*Luke 8:54 And he put
them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.
*Matthew 9:25 When the crowd had been
driven outside, he went in, took her by the hand, and the young lady got up.
“Talitha cumi” = Aramaic:, Language of the
country, “Little Lamb, wake up.” A strong impression made upon the eye-witness, the parents and Apostles.
(Mark is writing to an Gentile audience and translating for the Gentile reader)
We notice,
this is the 2nd time Jesus took some one by the hand. Jesus took Peter’s
mother-in-law hand. Jesus liked the
physical touch when healing someone.
*Mark 1:31 So He came and took
her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she
served them.
Mark 5:42 Immediately the girl arose and walked,
for she was twelve years of age.
And they were overcome with great amazement.
The
disciples knew that Jesus had power over nature and evil spirits. But now, this
handful of people knew that Jesus had power over death.
Do
you think that Jairus and his wife realized at that moment that God’s own Son
was sitting in their daughter’s bedroom? How blessed they were! Not only was
their daughter fine, but they had also come face to face with the long-awaited
Messiah.
The
parents and disciples were overcome with great amazement. Indeed. can we picture what they did.
The age of 12 was mentioned by Mark and here
as explanation that she was old enough to walk around the room in perfect
health and strength.
*Luke 8:55 Then her
spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be
given something to eat. (Spirit left and came again)
Mark 5:43 But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.
*Luke 8:56 And her parents were
astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
She was restored
to perfect health; Just think, what will
be said when she walks out of the house.
The girl's reappearance could not be hidden very long. Such orders
would, however, allow Jesus to exit quietly
I am sure she was hungry and needed food for her strength would then be recovered by
natural means. Jesus wanted to show she was raised by the His Power, but He wanted food
for her as evidence that she was
really restored to life and health.
Jesus wanted to
keep His miracles quiet for a while for one main reason; the Jewish Authorities
wanted Jesus dead and probably anyone who had healing by Jesus, which would be
a strong witness to others.
There are three
cases, besides Jesus own resurrection, of Christ raising the dead.
This case is
immediately after death; another, that of the son of a widow, at least
twenty-four hours after death; the third, that of Lazarus, several days after
death, when corruption would naturally have begun; in one case privately; in
the second, publicly; in the third, before bitter enemies. 3 different time periods. (Matthew 27:51-53 – saints brought back to
life)
*Luke 7:14 Then He came and
touched the open coffin, and those
who carried him stood still. And He said, "Young man, I say to you,
arise."
*John 11:44 And he who had died came out
bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth.
Jesus said to them, "Loose him, and let him go." (Lazarus)
*John 12:10-11 But the chief priests plotted to put
Lazarus to death also, (11) because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.
Did they also want to kill this young child
and young man now.
Cannot
find any case where No one ever died in Jesus presence, except if you want say
those on the cross.
*Matthew 9:26 And the report of
this went out into all that land.
So
much for keeping it quiet. Is the girl
life in danger now.
Next time we will cover
the lady with the issue of Blood.
