Yom Kippur: Day of Atonement meaning

Yom Kippur: Day of Atonement meaning
October 12,  2016

Atonement or At-One-Ment with God

We are here to celebrate the Feast of Atonement, which comes 10 days after the Feast of Trumpets, on the 10th of Tishri and 5 days before the Feast of Tabernacles.

Satan is the god of this world right now and has directed the nations for the last 6000 years.  Satan has influenced leaders and inspired World Wars and cause misery, death and suffering from the time of Adam and Eve.  Jesus tells us Satan days are number.

Satan is the prince of the power of the air and will be replaced by our Lord and King, Jesus at His coming at the start of the Millennium.  Yes Satan’s days are numbered and the Day of Atonement looks forward to this event.  When Satan is removed, he cannot longer broadcast his moods and evil, rebellious attitudes.  This day then pictures Christ replacing Satan as world ruler and removing him to a place completely away and apart from mankind.  Satan will be bound and locked up, no longer able to deceive the nations for 1000 years.

Ephesians 2:2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,

1 John 5:19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

Revelation 12:9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Jesus the Messiah has already overcome the Devil and qualified to replace him. Jesus Christ is coming as King of Kings and Lord of Lords to take over the governments of this world and remove and restrain Satan.

The Day of Atonement reveals what will happen to Satan and his demons, because this part of the message is unique to the 5th High Day of Jesus plan.

Revelation 20:1-3 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key to the bottomless pit, with a large chain in his hand.  (2)  He captured the dragon, that ancient serpent, also known as the devil and Satan, and tied him up for a thousand years.  (3)  He threw him into the bottomless pit, locked it, and sealed it over him to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were over. After that he must be set free for a little while.

Revelation 18:2 He cried out in a powerful voice, "Fallen! Babylon the Great has fallen! She has become a home for demons. She is a prison for every unclean spirit, a prison for every unclean bird, and a prison for every unclean and hated beast.

What does that mean for us, followers of our Lord Jesus.  When Satan and his demons are removed from office, they must be replaced by qualified rulers.  We know Satan will be replaced by Jesus and we, His Saints, will replace the demons rule the world.

The Apostle Paul predict the end of world rule by fallen angels

Hebrews 2:5 For he did not put the coming world we are talking about under the control of angels.

Again, the Apostle Paul explains who will replace the demons as rulers over the world?

Romans 16:20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, be with all of you!

1 Corinthians 6:2-3 You know that the saints will rule the world, don't you? And if the world is going to be ruled by you, can't you handle insignificant cases?  (3)  You know that we will rule angels, not to mention things in this life, don't you?

Only by the power of the Holy Spirit will we be able to rule under Jesus, this is the message of the Day of Atonement.  We need to become at one with God.  At-One-Ment with God.

How are we to do this, by fasting, humbling ourselves, to draw closer to God and to see ourselves as we are and to see God as He is, our salvation.

But, what is fasting, denying ourselves food and water for 24 hours, from sunset to sunset.  This is the only command “fast” Jesus gives us.  When we fast, our bodies will cry for food and our spirit will have the sincere desire to obey God.

A commanded assembly on this day, we are told to afflict ourselves.

Leviticus 23:26-32 The LORD spoke to Moses,  (27)  "However, on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It's a sacred assembly for you. Humble yourselves and bring an offering made by fire to the LORD. (28)  "You are not to do any work that same day. It's the Day of Atonement, because your atonement is made in the presence of the LORD your God. (29)  Anyone who doesn't humble himself that same day is to be eliminated from contact with his people.  (30)  I'll eliminate anyone who does work that day from among his people. (31)  You are not to do any work. This is to be an eternal ordinance throughout your generations wherever you live. (32)  It's a Sabbath of rest for you, on which you are to humble yourselves starting the evening of the ninth day of the month. You are to observe your Sabbath from evening to evening."

Humble or afflict, just means to fast, to beat down, depress, chasten.

Psalms 35:13 But as for me, when they were sick, My clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting; And my prayer would return to my own heart.

Isaiah 58:3 'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?' "In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, And exploit all your laborers.

How are we to fast
What does Jesus our Lord gives us instruction when we fast
Matthew 6:17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,  (18)  so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Isaiah said there is a right way and a wrong way to fast.

Isaiah 58:5 Is it a fast that I have chosen, A day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, And to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Would you call this a fast, And an acceptable day to the LORD?  (6)  "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?

Atonement just means to set “at one.”  This means that God and man to form as one by uniting with the Holy Spirit and this can only be done until Satan is removed and the whole world has repented.  We will be there to help those who are still alive.

What about the New Testament Church, did they observed the Day of Atonement.

Apostle Paul tells us that God’s Holy Days foreshadow events to come, the plan of God in advance.  These festivals are yet to be fulfilled in God’s plan foreshadow future events – things yet to come.

Colossians 2:16-17 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths,  (17)  which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance (body) is of Christ.

The Apostle Paul wrote this book around 60 AD, what 30 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Remember Colossae was strictly a Gentile city and Paul was writing to a Church composed of Gentiles by birth.  They had known nothing of God or Jesus Holy Days, unless the elders taught them to observe the Holy Days.

The word “is” was added by the translators and changes the meaning.  It should read, substance (body) of Christ.

Is there another place where the New Testament church observed the Day of Atonement.

Acts 27:9  Now when much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous because the Fast was already over, Paul advised them,

The word “fast” refers to the Feast of Atonement.  Luke wrote over 30 years after the resurrection of Jesus.  Luke would never mention “the fast” unless he and all the church been observing the day.  Remember, the Holy Spirit inspired these words in the Book of Acts.

We know the early New Testament Church of God is our example for today, which are following the example given us.

1 Thessalonians 2:14 For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans,

But as we grow in the knowledge of the teachings of our Lord, we do begin to understand why we observe the feast days.  When we do understand the meaning of Jesus Appointed times, these feast days, they become more meaningful, yes that includes the Day of Atonement.

2 Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen

The Day of Atonement celebrates the time when Satan will be banished, prevented from influencing mankind, and the nations will at last come to accept Christ and His atoning sacrifice.
When we fast on the Day of Atonement it pictures to us the time and condition when we will no longer need to eat.  We will be changed to Spirit Bodies and will be Kings and Priests of the Most High God and not required food or water, but we can if we want to.  We will be like Jesus as He is.  This day should be a time of great rejoicing.

Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,  (25)  not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Each year this seems so much closer and has a deeper meaning to us, the Body of Christ.

Remember, we are to take an offering during this season.

Deuteronomy16:16-17 "Three times a year all your males shall appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks, and at the Feast of Tabernacles; and they shall not appear before the LORD empty-handed.  (17)  Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you.

It is significant that we celebrated the Feast of Trumpets 10 days ago, representing the return to the earth of our Lord and King, His 2nd coming and today, we celebrate the Day of Atonement, representing the removal of Satan and his demons and restoring all things, we the Saints will become at one with God and become rulers of the world under our Lord King and in 5 days, we will be rejoicing at the Feast of Tabernacles, which represents the Kingdom of God during the Millennium and then the Last Great Day, which represents the great resurrection of all who lived in the past.
Let us enjoy this coming Feast of Tabernacles and the Great Last Day.
Let’s sing the Feast Song as we leave this week to the Feast,
Come to the Feast # 143
