Day of Atonement, 2018 September
19, 2018
Why are we here today, on this High Day, the
Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur?
The Day of Atonement is perhaps the most
unusual and solemn Holy Day, for it is the only day on which God has commanded His
children to fast.
But as we grow in the knowledge of the
teachings of our Lord, we do begin to understand why we observe the feast
days. When we do understand the meaning
of Jesus Appointed times, these feast days, they become more meaningful, yes
that includes the Day of Atonement.
2 Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and
forever. Amen.
We are here to celebrate the Feast of
Atonement, which comes 10 days after the Feast of Trumpets, on the 10th
of Tishri and 5 days before the Feast of Tabernacles.
We are told to afflict ourselves.
Leviticus 23:26-32
And the LORD
spoke to Moses, saying: (27) "Also the tenth day of this seventh month
shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you
shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the LORD. (28)
And you shall do no work on that same day, {Why} for it is the Day of
Atonement, to make atonement for you before
the LORD your God. (29) For any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people.
(30) And any person who does any work on that same
day, that person I will destroy from among his people. (31) You shall do no
manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in
all your dwellings. (32) It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your
souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening,
you shall
celebrate your Sabbath."
We know that Satan has occupied the position
of this world’s ruler and is the god of this world and prince of the power of
the air and Satan will be
replaced by our Lord and King, Jesus at His coming at
the start of the Millennium.
Yes Satan’s days are numbered and the Day of
Atonement looks forward to this event.
When Satan is removed, he cannot longer broadcast
his moods and evil, rebellious attitudes. This day then pictures
Christ replacing Satan as world ruler and removing him
to a place completely away and apart from mankind.
Satan will be bound and locked up, no longer
able to deceive the nations for 1000 years.
At the return of Jesus
Christ, Satan the devil, who now leads all of mankind astray will be bound so all humans of
all nations can be reconciled to God.
Ephesians 2:2 in which you once walked {or lived} according
to the course {ways} of this world, according to the prince {ruler} of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons who are disobedient.
{this is what Satan and his demons are doing}
1 John 5:19 We know that we are children
of God, and the whole world lies under the sway {or control}
of the wicked
one. {that is Satan, evil
one}
Revelation 12:9 The great dragon was hurled down {or cast out} that ancient serpent called
the devil, or Satan,
who leads the whole world astray {deceived them}. He was hurled {cast} to
the earth, and his angels with him.
Revelation 20:1-3 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having
the key to the Abyss {bottomless pit} and
holding in his hand a great chain. (2) He seized the dragon, that
ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.
(3)
He threw him into the Abyss {bottomless pit},
and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations
anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free
for a short time.
Our world will become during of the
Millennium “at one with God.” That is
why it is called the Day of At – One – Ment.
Individuals will still have human nature, but Satan influence will be
gone.
This day is a spiritual feast of drinking in the Word of God.
The inner section of the Temple is located the
Holy of Holies, which contained the Ark of the Covenant and the lid of the Ark
is called the Mercy Seat.
The Holy of Holies in the Temple and
Tabernacle could only be entered by the High Priest, and only on one day of the
year, on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, when he was to sprinkle the blood
from the sacrifices upon the Mercy Seat.
Jesus as High
Priest and perfect sacrifice for all mankind
The book of Leviticus includes the law of
rituals, animal sacrifices, offerings, incense burnings and various washings,
which the priests had to perform. These
were the laws which was added because of transgressions till the seed (Christ)
should come.
Galatians 3:19 What purpose that does the law serve? It was added
because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise
referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a
mediator. {the law shows us we are not
in walk with Jesus}
The High Priest
did this atonement work alone
in the Temple. Christ, too, did His work alone on the cross.
Earlier, His disciples “all forsook Him and fled,”
Mark 14:50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.
Indeed, Jesus felt
so totally alone that he cried out to His Father:
Matthew 27:46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a
loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" (which means "My God,
my God, why have you forsaken me?").
At that point,
Jesus alone (by Himself) bore the sins of all humanity.
And in Jesus sacrifice
Hebrews 9:13-14 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a
heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify
them so that they are outwardly clean. (14) How much more, then,
will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal
Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from
acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!
The animal
sacrifices on Atonement and those at other times points to the coming sacrifice
of Jesus Christ.
We know the shedding of animal blood could
not change a person’s heart or take away sin
Hebrews 10:4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to
take away sins.
The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross
Hebrews 10:8-14 First he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt
offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with
them"—though
they were offered in accordance with the law. (9) Then he
said, "Here I am, I have come to do your will, O God." He sets aside
the first to establish the second. (10) And by that will, we have been made
holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
(11) Day after day every
priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the
same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. (12) But when this priest {Jesus} had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins
forever, he sat down at the right hand of God, (13) and since that
time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. (14) For by
one sacrifice he
has made perfect forever those who are being made holy {sanctified}.
{That is you and me, here}
Hebrews 9:26 Otherwise Christ would
have had to suffer many times since the foundation of the world. but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared
to put away sin
by the sacrifice of Himself.
This one-time
sacrifice of our great High Priest once and for all is more than sufficient to
pay for the sins of all of humanity, including yours and mine.
The Messiah is now our High Priest, These animal
sacrifices were a substitute for Christ, designed to lead Israel to
Christ. After the death and resurrection
of Jesus, the Messiah, sacrifices ceased
to be necessary until the millennium.
Galatians 3:24-26 So the law was our tutor
to bring us Christ that we might be justified by faith. (25) Now
that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. (26) For you are all sons of God through faith in
Christ Jesus {that is us, sons of God}
We, you and I, are a living sacrifice now in
this age
Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view
of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable
to God—this is your true
and proper worship.
Jesus enter behind the veil (Holy Holies
area) to the very throne of God in heaven.
Hebrews 6:19-20 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and
secure. It enters
the inner sanctuary behind the curtain {veil}, (20)
where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a High Priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.
Jesus own blood which he presented as an
offering for sin
Hebrews 9:12 He did not
enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining
eternal redemption.
Hebrews 9:28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins
of many; and he will appear a second time {Jesus return to the earth}, not to
bear sin, but to
bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. {we are waiting for Him}
Did the New Testament Church observed the Day
of Atonement.
Acts 27:9 Much time had been lost, and sailing had already
become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement {fast}. So Paul warned them,
Luke wrote this over 30 years after the death and resurrection of the
Messiah.
The Fast
is the Day of Atonement.
Luke would never have thought of mentioning the fast unless he and all
the Church had just been observing it and if the day were no longer in
existence, the Holy Spirit would not have inspired these words.
This is why there is a necessary for there to
be a Day of At-One-Ment.
Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your
sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
We as a people have sinned and become
separated from God and need reunification or atonement with God.
Romans
3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
The Old Priesthood was based on animal blood,
which only provided a temporary atonement; The New
Priesthood is based on Messiah’s
blood, which provides for an eternal redemption.
1 Corinthians 3:16 Don't you
know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your
midst?
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the
Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your
own; (20) you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your
bodies.
When we fast on the Day of Atonement it
pictures to us the time and condition when we will no longer need to eat. We will be changed to a Spirit Body and will
be Kings and Priests of the Most High God and not required food or water, but
we can if we want to. We will be like Jesus
as He is. This day should be a time of
great rejoicing.
Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on
toward love and good deeds, (25) not giving up meeting together, as
some are in the
habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the
more as you see the Day approaching.
Each year this seems so much closer and has a
deeper meaning to us, the Body of Christ, the Saints. We will finally become At-one-ment with God.
1 John 2:1-2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you
will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
(2) He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for
ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
(atoning sacrifice)
It is significant that we celebrated the
Feast of Trumpets 10 days ago, representing the return of our Lord and King,
His 2nd coming and today.
We celebrate the Day of Atonement,
representing the removal of Satan and his demons and restoring all things and
in 5 days.
We will be rejoicing at the Feast of
Tabernacles, which represents the Kingdom of God during the Millennium and then
the Last Great Day, which represents the great resurrection of all who lived in
the past.
What is the bottom line, we went through all
this. We are celebrating Jesus who is
our High Priest. Jesus made atonement
for me, for you, for all of us.
Jesus cleansed me and cleansed you of all our
sins. This is a very personal to each of
us.
When the Father looks at us, He does not see
us according to our sins, but see us according to the righteousness of His Son,
Jesus.
Next, Let us enjoy this coming Feast of Tabernacles and the Last Great Day. Be safe and we will see you after the feast.
Deuteronomy 16:14-15 Be joyful at your festival—you, your
sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites, the
foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns.
(15) For seven days celebrate the festival to
the LORD your God at the place the LORD will choose. For the LORD your God will
bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy
will be complete.
