In You Jesus, do I Take Refuge
· Remember, we are applying Psalms to our own
lives, not to David life. Psalms is a prophecy book that is quoted from more
than any other book of the Old Testament.
We will see that as we go through Psalms.
· Psalms was written for us today, for comfort,
encouragement, and instruction.
· Let us look at from a different perspective
on how it applies to us.
· Always put Jesus’ right in the middle of the Book of Psalms and us, right there.
Psalms 8:1-9
To the Director: On a stringed instrument. A David Psalm.
This is a Messiah Psalm, quoted in Matt 21:16, Heb 2:6-8, 1 Cor 15:27, Eph 1:22. This Psalm covers Jesus and the Body, Church.
How Majestic Is Your Name, Lord Jesus
Psalms 8:1 LORD, our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth! You set your glory above the heavens!
The name of the Father and Jesus are ways of describing who the Father and Jesus is.
Philippians 2:9-11 Now lifted up by God to heaven, a name above all others given, this matchless name possessing. (10) And so, when Jesus' name is called, the knees of everyone should fall wherever they're residing. (11) Then every tongue in one accord, will say that Jesus the Messiah is Lord, while God the Father praising.
Revelation 19:16 On his robe and his thigh he has a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS
Thigh: custom name, part of the body near which the sword was suspended
Psalms 8:2 Through the praise of children and
infants you have established a
stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
Jesus has Found Strength from the Mouth of Little Children Praise And by Their Example, Jesus Enemies are Shame and Silence
Jesus quoted this verse, after cleansing the Temple.
Matthew 21:15-16 But when
the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw
the wonderful things he did and
the children shouting in the temple courts,
"Hosanna to the Son of David," they
were furious. (16) "Do you hear what these children are
saying?" they asked him. "Yes," replied Jesus, "have you never read, "'From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise'?"
Interesting, Jesus identified Himself as God and scribes and teachers as the enemy and avenger described in this Psalm.
Jesus’s mortal enemies are the Scribes and Pharisees and Satan, who is the enemy of mankind who is filled with envy, wrath, and malice, against Jesus and his Saints.
Psalms 8:3 When I look
at the heavens, the work of your
fingers, the moon and the stars that you established
When I look at the Night Sky and see the Moon and Stars Jesus Made with His Finger and Set it All in Place
When I look up into the sky at night and consider what a great God had made the vast, wonderful universe. The splendors of creation and wonders of nature lead me to praise Jesus, the Creator of all things.
Jesus created all things
Hebrews 1:10 And, "In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2) He was with God in the beginning. (3) Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible attributes—his eternal power and divine nature—have been understood and observed by what he made, so that people are without excuse.
Psalms 8:4 what is man that you take notice of him, or the son of man that you pay attention to him?
Why should the Father Remember His Saints and Pay Attention and Care for Jesus
·
How small I am, when looking at the vastness and
glory of Jesus Creation at night, need to get down and give honor and praise to
our Spiritual Elder Brother.
· How merciful Jesus is to each of us. Jesus has placed you and me over the works of His hands and to serve Him and the Father for all eternity.
The Apostle Paul quoted these Psalms many times.
Hebrews 2:6 Instead, someone
has declared somewhere, "What is man that you should
remember him, or the son of man that you should care for him?
Psalms 8:5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.
Two different ways of understanding this verse, Paul used it both ways.
Psalms 8:5-1 Jesus has made Individuals a Little Lower than the Angels for a Little While and will Crowned Individuals with Glory and Honor
Psalms 8:5-2 The Father has made Jesus a Little Lower than the Angels for a Little While and has Crowned Jesus with Glory and Honor.
Jesus made us in His image, just a little lower than the angels {think about that for a minute}. Jesus will crown us with glory and honor when He returns to the earth to set up His Kingdom.
Hebrews 2:7 You made him a little lower than the angels, yet you crowned him with glory and honor
Psalms 8:6 You gave him dominion over the work of your hands, you put all things under his feet:
Jesus has Made Individuals in Charge of Everything You Made with Your Hands and Put Everything Under Their Authority.
We humans were created to rule and take care over Jesus creation. Remember, all human beings are very valuable to Jesus because He created us in His own Glorious Image.
This is about mankind has almost
all things under them.
Hebrews 2:8 and put everything under his feet." Now when God put everything under him, he left nothing outside his control. However, at the present time we do not yet see everything put under him.
Paul says this about Jesus has
all things under Him right now.
1 Corinthians 15:27 For he "has put everything under his feet." Now when it says that "everything" has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.
Psalms 8:7 Sheep and cattle—all of them, wild creatures of the field,
Psalms 8:8 birds in the sky, fish in the sea—whatever moves through the currents {paths} of the oceans.
Jesus gave Individuals Authority Over the Sheep, Oxen, Wild Animals, Birds, Fish, and all the Life in the Sea.
What are sheep and cattle used for, Sacrifices to God in the Temple, food, clothing, employed in agriculture, etc., the gifts of Jesus Creation to mankind. To used to make them subservient to mans use and be obedient to mans will.
Genesis 9:2 All the living creatures of the earth will be filled with fear and terror of you from now on, including all the birds of the sky, everything that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the ocean.
They've been assigned to live under your dominion.
James 3:7 For all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles,
and sea creatures can be or have been tamed by humans,
All mankind has
the responsibility to wisely manage the creatures and resources of this earth
in a way that gives God glory and is good for people.
Ephesians 1:21-23 He {Jesus} is far above every ruler, authority, power, dominion, and every name that can be named, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. (22) God has put everything under the Messiah's feet and has made him the head of everything for the good of the church, (23) which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills everything in every way.
Maybe what Paul
wrote will make a little more
sense now.
We are also little lower than the angels.
·
Jesus was also made a little lower than the angels,
we follow His example.
·
Jesus has already been given glory and honor and
sits at the right hand of the Father.
· Our will be when we are changed at Jesus coming and we become Kings and Priests of the Most High.
1 Corinthians 6:3 You know that we will rule angels, not to mention things in this life, don't you?
Revelation 1:6 and has made us a kingdom, priests for his God and Father, be glory and power forever and ever! Amen.
Hebrews 2:9 But we do see someone who was made a little lower than the angels. He is Jesus, who is crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might experience death for everyone.
Hebrews 2:10 It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering as part of his plan to glorify many children,
The Saints have guarding angels.
Hebrews 2:11 because both
the one who sanctifies and those who are being
sanctified all have the same
Father. That is why Jesus is not
ashamed to call them brothers
Hebrews 2:12-13 when he
says, "I will announce your name to my brothers. I will praise you within
the congregation." (13) And again, "I will trust him." And again,
"I am here with the children God has given
me." {That is you and me}
Hebrews 2:14 Therefore, since the children have flesh and blood, he himself also shared the same things, so that by his death he might destroy the one who has the power of death (that is, the devil)
Hebrews 2:15-16 and might free those who were slaves all their lives because they were terrified by death. (16) For it is clear that he did not come to help angels. No, he came to help Abraham's descendants,
Hebrews 2:17 thereby becoming like his brothers in every way, so that he could be a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God and could atone for the people's sins.
Hebrews 2:18 Because he himself suffered when
he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being
tempted.
Father is the LORD, Jesus, our Lord, how Excellent and Wonderful is Your Names in All the Earth!
This is why we do not want to take the name of Jesus in vain.
· The psalm ends with the same words with
which it begins.
· There are three wonderful and important
truths about man found in this Psalm of Chapter 8;
· When these truths are denied or neglected, man never is what God made him to be.
1.
God made people.
2.
God made people something glorious.
3.
God made people for a high and worthy
destiny.
Psalms 8:5-6 You made him a little less than divine, but you crowned him with glory and honor. (6) You gave him dominion over the work of your hands, you put all things under his feet:
We see the Psalms
8 description of people and their place in the created order.
