Additional thoughts on the
Night to be Observed?
I do not know for sure, I
do know there is no verse that I can find in the New Testament that says we are
too observed this night. Then why do I
observe this night.
Let’s look at the verse
again:
Exodus 12:42 KJV It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this
is that night of the LORD to be
observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.
OK, to
be observed, what does that have to do with me as a Christian, as a New
Testament Christian (NTC), am I
supposed to observed this day. What
about the Passover, are we to observe this as a NTC? In the same chapter, next verse, 43, the Institution of the Passover
Exodus 12:43 NKJV And the LORD said to Moses and
Aaron, "This is the ordinance of
the Passover: No foreigner shall eat it.
Have you notice verse 50, Jesus Commanded
Exodus 12:50 NKJV Thus all the children of Israel did;
as the LORD commanded Moses and
Aaron, so they did.
What did
Jesus say in the NT:
Luke 22:15 Then He {Jesus} said to them,
"With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;
Jesus institute a new way
of observing the NT Passover, only with 3 elements with His disciples shortly
before His death for the NTC?
Jesus instituted or started the New
Testament symbols of (1) the bread and (2) wine picturing His body and blood. He also added (3) foot washing to the observance to illustrate having a
humble, serving attitude.
There is no question in my mind that we were given a command
for the bread and wine, do this in
remembrance of Me and said Likewise.
Luke 22:19 And He took bread, gave
thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which
is given for you; do this in
remembrance of Me."
Luke 22:20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying,
"This cup is the new covenant in My
blood, which is shed for you.
Now, about washing one another’s feet.
Ought,
John 13:14-15 (NKJV) If I then, your Lord
and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to
wash one another's feet. (15) For I have given you an example, that you should
do as I have done to you.
Different
translations:
John 13:14-15 ISV So if I, your Lord and Teacher,
have washed your feet, you must also
wash one another's feet. (15) I have set an example for you, so that you may do as I have done to you.
John 13:14-15 NIV Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have
washed your feet, you also should
wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an
example that you should do as I have
done for you.
Right now, Jesus is looking for those who will follow Him. Remember, the 4 seeds we covered and where
the seeds fell and only one brought life.
This is what Jesus is doing now.
How many times did Jesus say, Follow
Me in the Scriptures. This term is
found 20 times in the Gospels and Acts.
Two examples:
Mark 8:34 KJV And when he had
called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them,
Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
John 21:19 NKJV This He spoke,
signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He
said to him, "Follow Me."
What
does follow me really mean? Following
Jesus begins when we respond to His call to repent of our sins, putting out our
sins from us and are reconcile with God and then believe the gospel on what
Jesus has done for us, this is what the Passover season is all about.
When
Jesus gave the in-depth teaching on the basic principles for what a Christian
will be in the Walk with Christ, He conclude with a profound importance of
hearing and obeying His teaching.
Matthew 7:24-27 NKJV "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them,
I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: (25) and the
rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and
it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. (26) "But everyone who
hears these sayings of Mine, and does
not do them, will be like a foolish
man who built his house on the sand: (27) and the rain descended, the
floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great
was its fall."
Basically,
building our life on obedience to his teaching is wise and disobedience to His
word is folly and leads to ruin.
Following Jesus also involves following his example. What is the principle learned of washing one
another feet, serving
one another in humility of heart and of becoming servant leaders.
We have found out from the Book of Mark so far about Jesus, faith, love
and being a servant. If we want to be
like Jesus, we much have these 3 things in our lives. So far in Mark, what comes to mind is Jesus
telling His disciples they could not do something because of your fear and lack
of faith.
Faith
does not suddenly appear in our life, it is something that grows over time as
we try to follow Jesus example.
Obedience or following Jesus is not legalism, where Legalism comes from trying to
earn God’s favor by obedience and sacrifice.
Jesus knows we need help in following His Way of Life, is why we have
the Holy Spirit living in us so we can obey His teachings and follow His
example.
Why were
the OT written for:
1 Corinthians 10:11 NKJV (11) Now all these
things happened to them as examples,
and they were written for our admonition,
upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
Romans 15:4 NKJV For whatever things were
written before were written for our
learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures
might have hope.
Lets
look at different examples about the principles we are to learn from the OT. Read these completes chapters.
1 Corinthians 9:9 NKJV For it is written in the
law of Moses, "YOU SHALL NOT MUZZLE AN OX WHILE IT TREADS OUT THE
GRAIN." Is it oxen God is concerned
about? No, about ministers
preaching
1 Corinthians 10:6 NKJV (6) Now these things became our
examples, to the intent that we
should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.
Php_3:17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you
have us for a pattern.
2Th_3:9 not because we do not have authority, but to
make ourselves an example of how you
should follow us.
1Ti_4:12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct,
in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Heb_4:11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that
rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example
of disobedience.
Jas_5:10 My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in
the name of the Lord, as an example of
suffering and patience.
1Pe_2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ
also suffered for us, leaving us an example,
that you should follow His steps:
2Pe_2:6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah
into ashes, condemned them to destruction,
making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly;
Jud_1:7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around
them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual
immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal
fire.
We notice this night to be much
observed unto the LORD should be observed, why,
because we are told to do it “unto the Lord.”
We know,
there are so many things in the OT are an example for us, this is another one
of those things we should do “unto the Lord (Jesus).”
There
are mysteries in the Scriptures and principles.
Luke 8:10 NKJV And He said, "To
you it has been given to know the
mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in
parables, that 'SEEING THEY MAY NOT SEE, AND HEARING THEY MAY NOT UNDERSTAND.'
Ephesians 1:9 NKJV having made known to
us the mystery of His will,
according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself,
There are many other
Scriptures we could use in mysteries.
Hebrews 11:1 NKJV Now faith is the
substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
It all comes down to is
faith. Jesus says to observe this night
unto Himself.
Is this night celebration
contrary to the Scriptures and teachings of Jesus in the NT. Do not believe it is.
The bottom line is, your
right, there is not place in the NT that I know of says we are to observe the
night. But there is proof in the OT and
many circumstantial evidents in the examples from the OT was done for an
example for us today. Then the
principle of this comes down to a matter of faith why we do it today as a
church. Read Heb 11, the faith chapter.
We have to bring various Scriptures
together to have a little clearer understanding why.
