James - Introduction, April 26, 2014

April 26, 2014                                     Book of James

Introduction - Part 1

Jas 1:1-12 NKJV  James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings.  (2)  My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,  (3)  knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.  (4)  But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.  (5)  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.  (6)  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.  (7)  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;  (8)  he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.  (9)  Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation,  (10)  but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.  (11)  For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.  (12)  Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

This is an Epistle written by James or as know by the name of Jacob.

James name in Greek is Jacobos, Jacob in Hebrew

James who wrote the Book of James is the brother of our Lord and Creator.

Considered by the early church as a son of Mary and Joseph.  (Early Church Writers)

Matt 12:46-47 NKJV  While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him.  (47)  Then one said to Him, "Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You."

Matt 13:55 NKJV  Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas (Jude)?

Notice, James is the first one mention.  Jesus might have been only a couple of years older than James. Jesus was around 33 when He died and James was probably around 31 at the time.  Jude was Jesus younger brother.

Mark 6:3 NKJV  Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?"

Order is just a little different, but the same, even now with 2 or more sisters.

See Luke 8:19-20, same as Matt 12  NKJV  Then His mother and brothers came to Him, and could not approach Him because of the crowd.  (20)  And it was told Him by some, who said, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see You."

James was an Unbeliever before the resurrection:

John 7:5 NKJV  For even His brothers did not believe in Him.

His step brothers, who lived with them for almost 30 years did not believe Jesus during His ministry.  Too close to him.

The Apostle Paul said:  Did James have a wife.

1Cor 9:5 NKJV  Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?

Wondering, we only have a record of James and Jude Believing, were they the ones that was married?

Lord appeared to James:   Paul said:

1Cor 15:7 NKJV  After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles.

The Apostle Paul said he saw James, the Lord’s brother

Gal 1:18-19 NKJV  Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and remained with him fifteen days.  (19)  But I saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord's brother.

Those going to other churches founded by Paul are said to have come from James

Gal 2:11-12 NKJV  Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed;  (12)  for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.

James was intensely Jewish: his advice to Paul when he came to Jerusalem bringing alms for his nation; James suggested that Paul should be at charges for some brethren who were about to complete their Nazarite vow.

Act 21:18 NKJV  On the following day Paul went in with us to James, and all the elders were present.

Act 21:23-24 NKJV  Therefore do what we tell you: We have four men who have taken a vow.  (24)  Take them and be purified with them, and pay their expenses so that they may shave their heads, and that all may know that those things of which they were informed concerning you are nothing, but that you yourself also walk orderly and keep the law.

James was a man of great authority within the Body and leader of the Jerusalem council.

James gives advice in this letter to help his readers live for Christ.

Paul called him a Pillar of the church.

Gal 2:9 NKJV  and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

Pillar:  4769. stulos, stoo'-los; a post, support

When was the Book of James written?

The Book of James was written somewhere between 60 to 62 A.D, what almost 30 years after the resurrection of Jesus. James was probably in his early 60’s by now.  Following the reign of Festus (60-62 A.D.), there was a brief lull in Roman authority before the new Roman governor, Claudius Albinus, took full control.

This Epistle was probably one of the earliest New Testament books.  Some think it might have been written in the 50’s.

How did James, the brother of the Lord died

James was known as an unusually good man and was surnamed, the Just, by his countrymen and well thought of by the Jews and Romans.

In this brief period a conspiracy led by Annas the Younger, the son of the high priest Annas, illegally arranged for the execution of James in A.D. 62. [Hegesippus’ account recorded by Eusebius (Historia Ecclesiastica, II.230 and Josephus, Antiquities, XX.9.1).]

The authority for execution was taken away from the Jewish Leadership as was the custom of the Romans.

Many historians thought the execution of the popular James may have been a major key event in the circumstances that led up to the rebellion and its squelching by the Romans in 66-70 A.D.

Hegesippus also, who flourished nearest the days of the apostles, in the fifth book of his Commentaries gives the most accurate account of him, thus:

But James, the brother of the Lord, who, as there were many of this name, was surnamed the Just by all from the days of our Lord until now, received the government of the church with the apostles.  This apostle was consecrated from his mother’s womb.  He drank neither wine nor fermented liquors, and abstained from animal food.  A razor never came upon his head, he never anointed with oil, and never used a bath.

He alone was allowed to enter the sanctuary.  He never wore woolen, but linen garments.  He was in the habit of entering the temple alone and was often found upon his bended knees and interceding for the forgiveness of the people; so that his knees became as hard as camel’s, in consequence of his habitual supplication and kneeling before God.

And indeed, on the account of his exceeding great piety, he was called the Just which signifies justice and protection of the people.

Going up therefore on a wing of the Temple, they cast down the just man, saying to one another, Let us stone James the Just.  And they were stoning him…..And one of them, a fuller, beat out the brains of Justus with the club that he used to beat out clothes.
Thus he suffered martyrdom, and they buried him on the spot where his tombstone is still remaining, by the temple…. Immediately after this, Vespasian invaded and took Judea….The wiser part of the Jews were of opinion that this was the cause of the immediate siege of Jerusalem, which happened to them for no other reason than the crime against him.
Josephus also said, These things, says he, happened to the Jews to avenge James the Just, who was the brother of him that is called Christ, and whom the Jews had slain, notwithstanding his pre-eminent justice.
Did you notice, that James spent so much time on his knees in Prayer that they became hard and callous like a camel’s knees.
Stop here, continue next week.

Prophetic Scriptures Part 2 March 22, 2014

March 22, 2014  Prophetic Scriptures Part 2

Review:

With Passover just a few weeks away, we are to start thinking about this Passover Season and how the Passover is all about our Lord and Creator.

As I said last week, we need every so often to go back and review, do we really believe in our deepest being that Jesus is the Messiah mention in the Old Testament prophecies.  We understand this in our mind, but do we understand this in our heart.  Right before the Passover season is a good time to go over this subject.  Paul tells us

We know from 1 Cor 11:28  A man ought to examine himself

We have to be convince in our hearts that Jesus is the Messiah.  How do we do that, but looking at prophecy about Jesus in the Old Testament and then, did Jesus fulfil the Scriptures in the New Testament.

How sure can we be, confidence that the Bible is what it says it is.

From Acts 10:43 we found All the prophets testify about him

How many times are Old Testament Scriptures quoted or allude to about our Creator and Lord, Jesus in the NEW Testament.

There are about 300 prophecies in the Old Testament detailing the Coming Messiah, that Jesus Christ fulfilled them and quoted or allude to in NEW Testament.

The Old Testament Hebrew Scriptures were translated into Greek around 270 B.C.

(Notice  - was translated 2 centuries before the Gospel period.)

(Luke 24:44-45 NIV)  He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." {45} Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
This verse shows that Jesus is on every page of the Old Testament
(Acts 13:27 NIV)  The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.
Old Testament Prophecies Quoted in the Gospels.

Prophecy Scriptures about the Messiah.   Prophecies, Jesus fulfilled each one of these prophecy.

We looked at the first Messiah prophecy last week.

Born in Bethlehem – location of Jesus birth

(Micah 5:2 NIV)  Bethlehem … one who will be ruler over Israel

(Mat 2:6 NIV)  Bethlehem, for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'"

This is where we left off.

Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey’s colt.

(Zec 9:9 NIV)  Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

(Mat 21:4-5 NIV)  This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: {5} "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"

(John 12:15 NIV)  "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."

Riding this unbroken colt was a miracle in itself!

The symbolism of riding a donkey refers to the Eastern tradition that it is an animal of peace, versus the horse, which is the animal of war. Therefore, a king came riding upon a horse when he was bent on war and rode upon a donkey when he wanted to point out that he was coming in peace. Therefore Jesus' entry to Jerusalem symbolized his entry as the Prince of Peace, not as a war waging king

The Triumphal Entry

The specific prediction of the precise day that the Messiah would present Himself as King to Jerusalem.

(Dan 9:26 NIV)  After the sixty-two 'sevens,' the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.

(Zec 9:9 NIV) **Repeat*** Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey

(Luke 19:38 NIV)  "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

This is the only day Jesus allows them to proclaim Him King.

The Pharisees will always let us know when they are concern

The people sang part of:

(Psa 118:26 NIV)  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you.

(John 12:13 NIV)  They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! " "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!"

(Luke 19:39 NIV)  Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!"

(Luke 19:40 NIV)  "I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out."

Jesus held them accountable to recognize this very day.  This was on the 10th day of Nisan, prior to the Passover on the 14th.

(Luke 19:41-44 NIV)  As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it {42} and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes. {43} The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. {44} They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you."

Is this why God allowed Jerusalem to be destroyed?

30 Pieces of Silver

(Zec 11:12 NIV)  I told them, "If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it." So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.

(Zec 11:13 NIV)  And the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter"--the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter.

(Psa 41:9 NIV)  Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

(John 13:18-19 NIV)  "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' {19} "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He.

(Mat 27:3-5 NIV)  When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. {4} "I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood." "What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility." {5} So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

(Mat 27:6-9 NIV)  The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money." {7} So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners. {8} That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. {9} Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "They took the thirty silver coins, the price set on him by the people of Israel,

Price: 30 pieces of silver;

Location of the transaction: the House of the Lord (Temple);

who ends up with the money? The potter!

When someone died, the Temple had the problem of dealing with those who had died, so they bought the potter field.  Expense.

Stopped Here in Part 1

Wounds in Hands

(Zec 13:6 NIV)  If someone asks him, 'What are these wounds on your body ?' he will answer, 'The wounds I was given at the house of my friends.'

House of my friends, see Was Thomas unbelief

(John 20:25-29 NIV)  So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." {26} A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" {27} Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." {28} Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" {29} Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Jesus was accused of a capital crime; make no defense even though innocent?

(Isa 53:7 NIV)  He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

(Mark 14:61 NIV)  But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"

(Mat 27:13-14 NIV)  Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?" {14} But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge--to the great amazement of the governor.

(Acts 8:32-33 KJV)  The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: {33} In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

(Acts 8:35 NIV)  Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

(1 Pet 2:23 NIV)  When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

Jesus Died with Wicked; but Buried with Rich; Not a bone would be broken

Would be buried by a rich man

(Isa 53:9 NIV)  He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

(1 Pet 2:22 NIV)  "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."

Mark 15:27-28 KJV)  And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left. {28} And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

(Mark 15:43 NIV)  Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.

Had to be related to have Jesus body.

Jesus was Crucified and the soldiers divided up his clothes/ garments, His Side would be pierced

(Psa 22:16-18 NIV)  Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. {17} I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. {18} They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.

(Isa 53:5 NIV)  But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

(Exo 12:46 NIV)  "It must be eaten inside one house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones.

(Psa 34:20 NIV)  he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.

(Deu 21:21-23 NIV)  Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid. {22} If a man guilty of a capital offense is put to death and his body is hung on a tree, {23} you must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God's curse. You must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

(Zec 12:10 NIV)  "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.

(John 18:32 NIV)  This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken indicating the kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled.

(Gal 3:13 NIV)  Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."

(1 Pet 2:24 NIV)  He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

(Mark 15:24 NIV)  And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.

(John 19:16 NIV)  Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

(John 19:23-24 NIV)  When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. {24} "Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, "They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing." So this is what the soldiers did.

(John 19:36 NIV)  These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken,

(John 19:37 NIV)  and, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced."

(Acts 3:18 NIV)  But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Christ would suffer.

(This was written 700 years before crucifixion invented.) Invented by the Persians, then adopted by the Romans.

The official form of capital punishment in Israel was stoning.

"They hated me without a cause"

(Psa 69:14 NIV)  Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.

(Psa 69:4 NIV)  Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal.

Quoted by Jesus Christ in

(John 15:25 NIV)  But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason.'

"Zeal for thy house shall eat me up"

***(Psa 69:9 NIV)  for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.

Quoted in (John 2:17 NIV)  His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me."

Jesus would be born of a virgin

(Isa 7:14 NIV)  Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

(Mat 1:22-23 NIV)  All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: {23} "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" --which means, "God with us."

He would sojourn in Egypt

(Hosea 11:1 NIV)  "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.

(Mat 2:14-15 NIV)  So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, {15} where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."

He would live in Galilee

(Isa 9:1-2 NIV)  Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan-- {2} The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.

(Mat 4:14-16 NIV)  to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: {15} "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles-- {16} the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."

Massacre of Bethlehem’s children

(Jer 31:15 NIV)  This is what the LORD says: "A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more."

(Mat 2:17-18 NIV)  Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: {18} "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."

His mission would include the Gentiles

(Isa 42:1-4 NIV)  "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. {2} He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. {3} A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; {4} he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope."

(Mat 12:17-21 NIV)  This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: {18} "Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. {19} He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. {20} A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory. {21} In his name the nations will put their hope."

Ministry would be one of healing

(Isa 53:4 NIV)  Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.

(Matt 8:17 NIV)  This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases."

He would teach through parables

(Psa 78:2 NIV)  I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, things from of old--

(Isa 6:9-10 NIV)  He said, "Go and tell this people: "'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.' {10} Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed."

(Mat 13:34-35 NIV)  Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. {35} So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world."

Jesus is the capstone

(Psa 118:22 NIV)  The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone;

(Mat 21:42 NIV)  Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: "'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone ; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?

Jesus would be given vinegar and gall

(Psa 69:21 NIV)  They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.

(Mat 27:34 NIV)  There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.

(John 19:28-30 NIV)  Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." {29} A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. {30} When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Jesus dying words foretold while on the cross

(Psa 22:1 NIV)  For the director of music. To the tune of "The Doe of the Morning." A psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?

(Mat 27:46 NIV)  About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

Jesus was raised from dead after 3 days and 3 nights as a sign

(Jonah 1:17 NIV)  But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.

(Mat 12:39-40 NIV)  He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. {40} For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

The Father talking about Jesus

(Psa 2:7 NIV)  I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, "You are my Son ; today I have become your Father.

(Acts 13:33 NIV)  he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: "'You are my Son; today I have become your Father.'

Picking a new Apostle

(Psa 69:25 NIV)  May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
