The Gospel of Mark 7:1-23

The Gospel of Mark 7:1-23              May 26, 2018

We are starting Chapter 7 and we can call this:  The hazard of traditions.

We all have traditions and they have meaning and are useful in many ways and they also represent a hazard.  Sometimes we get bound by them.  This chapter is really a guard against that.  There is one misunderstood Scripture

Traditions and Commandments, Difference,  Ceremonial Washings

Mark 7:1 Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem.    {about 100 miles}

*Matthew 15:1 Then some Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked,

*John 7:1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea {Jerusalem area}, because the Jews sought to kill Him.

We can say Religious leaders came from Headquarters to find fault and pin something on Him.  A hit squad of some kind.  They already made up their mind about Jesus.

The religious leaders speak of elaborate ceremonial washings, not washing for the sake of cleanliness.  You would have to first wash your hands to make them clean, then perform the ritual to make them spiritually clean

Mark 7:2 Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault.

 {unclean hands without religious ceremonial washing}

*Matthew 15:2 "Why do your disciples disregard the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands when they eat."

These washings were commanded by tradition, not by Scripture.  The Pharisees found fault about the failure of the disciples to observe elaborate ceremonial washings.

This had nothing to do with personal cleanness, nor was this commanded by the Law, by the way. This was a ritual, such a practice, a tradition, the Pharisees treated like it was part of the law.

These professionals were the religious “hit-men.” They were upset any time or every time that Jesus undermined their authority over the people and their traditions.  They said Jesus was encroaching into their turf and responsibility and Jesus was not allowed to.

We find this attitude in our churches today.  Do it the way they want it done or the deacons will talk with you. This is one of a major reason churches split apart.  Do and don’ts of the Sabbath is another example.  {adults you}

This is the same attitude and punishment that the Muslims do when they find a woman does not have her head covered or a man does not have a beard.

Mark 7:3 The Pharisees--and indeed all the Jewish people--don't eat unless they wash their hands properly, following the tradition of their elders.      {let’s look at this again}

*Matthew 15:2 "Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread."

The hand-washing described here was purely ceremonial. It wasn’t enough to properly clean your hands if they were very dirty. You would have to first wash your hands to make them clean, then perform the ritual to make them spiritually clean.

We know the Jews always find a biblical mandate that approves the priests had to wash their hands and feet prior to entering the Tabernacle is what  provides the foundation and tradition for the wide-spread practice of ritual washings.

*Exodus 30:19 for Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet in water from it.

The biggest concern of the Jews was “being clean because of health laws” including ritual washing, which seem to start about 200 B.C.  Ritual cleaning, not for cleanness.

For these ceremonial washings, special stone vessels of water were kept, because ordinary water might be unclean. To wash your hands in a special way, you started by taking at least enough of this water to fill one and one-half egg shells.

Then, you poured the water over your hands, starting at the fingers and running down towards your wrist. Then you cleansed each palm by rubbing the fist of the other hand into it. Then you poured water over your hands again, this time from the wrist towards the fingers.

Remember, the wedding Jesus made wine from water, what did he use.

*John 2:6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece.

The Jews even had an accompanying prayer to be said during the ritual washing: “Blessed be Thou, O Lord, King of the universe, who sanctified us by the laws and commanded us to wash the hands.”

To the Jews, this was very, very important.

Sometimes they call: “Tradition is a fence around the law.” (comes out of The Mishnah, writings of Jewish oral traditions made at the end of the 2nd century A.D.)

The problem is after a time the traditions take priority over the Law itself.

The Jews viewed tradition as protecting God’s Holy Word and assisted His people in keeping it. This probably began with good intentions, but finally became a replace to the Law.

These laws started back when the Jews return from Babylon because one of the reason they went into captivity because not Observing the Sabbath.

In the effort to protect the Sabbath from being broken by labor, the Jewish people were given a list of don’t do—“fences” and what you can do:

      One could not look into a mirror, lest a gray hair might be plucked;

      One couldn’t wear false teeth, lest they fall out and picking them up would be working.

      The rabbis debated about a man with a wooden leg: if his home caught fire, could he retrieve it on the Sabbath?

      If someone spit on the Sabbath he had to take care of where it landed: if it landed in the dirt and was scuffed with his sandal it would be cultivating the soil and thus performing work.

Did you know, I have been told, if we are in an Israeli hotel on Sabbath, you will encounter the Sabbath elevators: every floor is pre-selected to avoid having to push a button.(Usually there are two: one stopping on odd numbered floors; the other on even.)

The Pharisees’ commitment to ritual purity made them extremely very self-righteous.  Actually, we can understand why they started the Oral Law, which was written down, but was man’s tradition and interpretation on top of the written law.

Mark 7:4 They don't eat anything from the marketplace unless they dip it in water. They also observe many other traditions, such as the proper washing of washing cups, jars, brass pots, and dinner tables.

We have to be careful of doctrine issues and start adding our traditions, because it could give the wrong impression of God to others individuals. Washing the hands removed partial ceremonial impurity picked up in the marketplace.

Mark 7:5 So the Pharisees and the scribes asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with unclean hands."

Pharisees were alarm by this.  Remember, these washings were commanded by tradition, not by Scripture.

*Matthew 15:3 He answered and said to them, "Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

Mark 7:6-7 He answered and said to them, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. (7) and in vain they worship me, teaching as Doctrines the Commandments of Men.

*Matthew 15:7-8 You hypocrites! How well did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said, (8) 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

Notice how strong Jesus words were against the Pharisees.

Often, the best defense is a well-directed offence. Jesus quotes:

*Isaiah 29:13 Then the Lord said: "Because these people draw near with their mouths and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, worship of me has become merely like rules taught by human beings.

*Matthew 15:9 Their worship of me is empty, because they teach human rules as doctrines.'"

Mark 7:8 For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men-- the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do."

Jesus said the Jews abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition."

Mark 7:9 Then he told them, "You have such a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your own tradition!

*Matthew 15:3 But he answered them, "Why do you also disregard the commandment of God because of your tradition?

He who expounds the Scriptures in opposition to the tradition has no share in the world to come.  per Rabbi Eleazer,

It is a greater offense to teach anything contrary to the voice of the Rabbis than to contradict the Scripture itself.   The Mishna

We start to realize that these traditions (oral law) became more important than the Law.

Mark 7:10 Because Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses his father or mother must certainly be put to death.'

*Matthew 15:4 Because God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses father or mother must certainly be put to death.'   {5th commandment is cited in both its positive and negative}

Mark 7:11-12  But you say, 'If a man says to his father or mother, "Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban"--' (that is, a gift to God), (12) then you {Jews} no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,

*Matthew 15:5-6 But you say 'Whoever tells his father or his mother,  support you might have received from me has been given to God," (6) does not have to honor his father.' Because of your tradition, then, you have disregarded the authority of God's word.

Now Jesus refers to the Law of honor your father and mother. They side-stepped the Commandment by simply declaring that their possessions were “Corban” (“given to God”), and thus dedicated for spiritual purposes.

They were to take care of their father and mother.  If they say, Corban, then they do not have to do it.  Their funds are set aside for the Lord, then they are exempt.  This was their reason to not support their own mother and father.  Reason children could circumvent their responsibility to parents.

Mark 7:13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And you do many other things like that."

Those who try to justify themselves by the Law end up modifying or changing it in order to escape its authority.

Notice what we just covered with Jesus comments:

      Teaching their doctrines as God’s Word - traditions;  v7

      Laying aside God’s Word;  v8

      Rejecting God’s Word;  v9

      Robbing God’s Word of its power.  v13

In the same way, those who handle God’s Word without submitting to it are in the constant process of conforming it to their way of life, not Jesus Way of life.

What Defiles a Person, What Jesus talking and discussing about, “don't eat unless they wash their hands properly.”

Mark 7:14 Then he called to the crowd again and told them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand!

*Matthew 15:10 Then calling out to the crowd, he addressed them, "Listen and understand!

Mark 7:15 There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man.    {remember, Peter was here}

*Matthew 15:11 Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man."

A careful reading of this passage shows that Jesus was not addressing the question of clean or unclean meats, nor was He changing any of His own laws.

Jesus was pointing out that the Pharisees had added to God's laws many commandments and rituals that were not commanded by God. One of those had to do with how one must wash his hands and arms in a special ceremonial way before eating.

He also said that such rituals of men do not purify the heart: The dirt that one might ingest, having not washed his hands, cannot defile a person. What comes out of the person, such as evil thoughts, adulteries, fornication and other sins, are what defiles him or her.

Any dirt from unwashed hands does not enter the heart but the "stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods " (verse 19). Jesus was saying that whatever enters the stomach is processed by the human digestive system to obtain any possible nutrients, and what is left is eliminated from the body as waste.

This is the simple and logical explanation of this text in its context, which shows that it has nothing to do with the subject of clean or unclean meats.

Mark 7:16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen!"

There that say, if you have ears, then listen.  Jesus is speaking spiritually.  What comes out of us is what defiles us.  There are certain animals if you eat, it will kill you.

List of poisonous animals:  Birds, Frogs and toads, Salamanders, certain Fish,  Insects.  Many says this gives them permission to eat unclean animals.  Making it a habit.

What about Peter, did he eat unclean animals?  This was several years later, 10 years?  Peter had this re-emphasized on a rooftop in Joppa;

*Acts 10:12-16 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. (13) And a voice came to him, "Rise, Peter; kill and eat." (14) But Peter said, "Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean." (15) And a voice spoke to him again the second time, "What God has cleansed you must not call common."  (16) This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again.

Peter finally understood what was told him in the vision.

*Acts 10:28 Then he said to them, "You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

Mark 7:17 When he had left the crowd and gone home, his disciples began asking him about the parable.

*Matthew 15:12 Then the disciples came and asked him, "Do you realize that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?"     {really}

*Matthew 15:13-14 He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be pulled up by the roots. (14) Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If one blind person leads another blind person, both will fall into a ditch."

*Matthew 15:15 Then Peter told him, "Explain to us this parable."

The disciples still just did not “get it.” What else is new.

Mark 7:18 So He said to them, "Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him,

*Matthew 15:16 So Jesus said, "Are you also still without understanding?

Jesus is not talking about physical food, but spiritually.

Mark 7:19 Because it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and is expelled as waste."

*Matthew 15:17 Don't you know that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and then is expelled as waste?

Mark 7:20 And He said, "What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.

*Matthew 15:18-19 But the things that come out of a person's mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.  (19)  For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

What comes out of the heart (mouth) is what makes us unclean.

Mark 7:21-22 because it's from within, from the human heart, that evil thoughts come, as well as sexual immorality, stealing, murder, (22) adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness.

Mark 7:23 All these evil things come from within and defile a man."

*Matthew 15:20 These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man."

Most of us fail to appreciate its impact since we are not familiar with the bondage from the legalism which had taken over.  Some traditions can be helpful as reminders of our heritage, but we must constantly beware lest traditions take the place of truth.

Jesus just set aside the Oral Ceremonial Washings Laws which are the traditions of the Jews and not part of the written Law of God.

Pentecost: the Birth of the Body, the Church

Pentecost: the Birth of the Body, the Church                May 20, 2018

We are celebrating a birthday party today, Pentecost (or Shavuot), and what comes to your mind about Pentecost?

There are many different things comes to mind and it is all good.

We are celebrating a birthday, the birthday of the Church or the Body of Jesus, which is the Feast of Pentecost (means 50), also known as Feast of Shavuot, or Feast of Harvest or Feast of Weeks.  Pentecost is the festival when Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and it is celebrated on the Sunday 50 days after the Wave Sheaf Offering during the Passover season.  I would like to cover one part of Pentecost we have not really covered before.

After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples and instructed them  to do what:

Luke 24:49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry {wait} in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued {or clothed} with power from on high." {Luke said to wait and in Acts, History of the Church}

Acts 1:1-5 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, (2) until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, (3) to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

(4) And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; (5) for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

For 40 days Jesus was with them, after which he ascended to heaven. Remember, From Passover to Pentecost was 50 days, so they waited 10 days until Pentecost.  At what time did Jesus say this, our date for Jesus ascension day to heaven would be May 10, for this year.

While Jesus was with them, he said: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised that, baptism of the Spirit would be called the birthday of the church or the Body.

Notice, all, one accord usually in prayer together.  Look at

Acts 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.  {Jesus physical half-brothers were there}

The Holy Spirit Descends, let’s look at this a little closer.

Acts 2:1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Did they do this for the nine days leading up to Pentecost

Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Acts 2:3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

Acts 2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them that ability.

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Think about it this, when the Holy Spirit, the Power of the Holy Spirit, came to the 120, Jesus considered this a baptism for His followers at the time and the Holy Spirit came upon those 120 in the upper room, a laying of Jesus hands on them.

Acts 1:15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said,

Jesus laid hands on the 120 disciples in the upper room when they became the body of Christ by the receiving of the Holy Spirit.

As far as I can tell, none of these 120 had to be re-baptise in water and had the laying of hands on them again.  Jesus did it by baptise them with the Holy Spirit and they received the Holy Spirit.  A truly miracle just happen.

The upper room is large enough to hold 120 brethren, not like we have here.

Let me ask, why 120.  Have you ever ask yourself, why.  Is this one of the things we need to dig deeper to understand why, a Remez.

Remember, King David wanted to build the Temple, but God would not let him because his hands were covered in blood, but God allowed Solomon to build the Temple.

King Solomon at this point in his life represents a “type” of Christ in that King Solomon (who is a son of David) builds an earthly Temple made by human hands, and Jesus (we know is a son of David) builds a heavenly Temple not made by human hands.

Hebrews 8:1-2 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, (2) a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.

120 priest’s preparation for cleaning and purification rituals of Solomon Temple for the Spirit of God.  Right hand of the Father.

Let’s compare.  There were 120 priests blowing trumpets at the dedication of Solomon’s Temple, when the Spirit of God filled that Temple. There were 120 disciples in the upper room when the Spirit came to human Temples.

We are the Temple of the Holy Spirit.

2 Chronicles 5:11-14 And it came to pass when the priests came out of the Most Holy Place (for all the priests who were present had sanctified themselves, without keeping to their divisions), (12) and the Levites who were the singers, all those of Asaph and Heman and Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, stood at the east end of the altar, clothed in white linen, having cymbals, stringed instruments and harps, and with them one hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets

(13) indeed it came to pass, when the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD, and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the LORD, saying: "For He is good, For His mercy endures forever," that the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, (14) so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God.

We find there were 120 priests blowing trumpets when the Spirit of God filled the Temple of Solomon and to notice that the Spirit of God came down after they all came into one accord, or harmony, making “one sound."

We just read, just as the 120 priests in Solomon’s day were all blowing their trumpets in harmony and praising, so also the 120 disciples were “with one accord." The Christians had no need of trumpets, however, for their mouths were filled with the voice and words of God, Spirit gave them utterance.

King Solomon is overseeing the dedication of the temple and he did assigned 120 Priests to perform the required purification.  We (Believers) had to be purified or cleansed.

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

We notice the 120 priest could not continue praising God because the glory of the LORD filled the house of God, while in the Upper Room there are 120 individuals praising God and waiting for the Promise of the Father, The Holy Spirit to come down upon them.

In the Temple, the Glory of the Lord fills the Holy of Holies, while in the upper room, the Glory of the Lord (the Holy Spirit) rests upon each of the 120 individuals in the form of tongues of flame.

Only the High Priest, once a year could enter the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement.  When Jesus died, the veil of the temple was torn in two and now all Saints have access to the Holy of Holies, year around.  When the Holy Spirit came upon the 120 individuals, they all became Saints.

Matthew 27:51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,

We know when we are saints, we have Jesus living in us and our bodies become the Temple of the Holy Spirit.

Philippians 1:1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?--unless indeed you are disqualified.

The Holy Spirit was given to New Testament saints and this symbolized the end of the Old Testament system of worship and the beginning of the Church of our Lord Jesus.

Church or the body is born.

Colossians 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

When we have the Holy Spirit in us, We are considered Saints.

If we did not have the Holy Spirit in us, we would not be a saint.

Before the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was with men and women and gave great skills for them to serve God. (for example, the constructing of the Tabernacle) But He did not permanently indwell all believers.

Psalms 51:11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

In the Upper Room, Jesus had told the disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit to be with them forever. He added, "You know Him because He abides with you and will be in you"

John 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever- (17) the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

The Holy Spirit was not free to be in the Believers until after Jesus was glorified. The arrival of the Holy Spirit was the proof.

John 7:39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

The Holy Spirit did not come until the Day of Pentecost. The coming of the Holy Spirit on that day assures us that Jesus had arrived back at the Father's throne.

John 14:20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.   {a new creation}

"in you": We covered the Holy Spirit was here on earth before Pentecost, but on the Day of Pentecost He came to, in believers. This is a unique fact of this age in which we are living. This was the thing which was new.

"...you in me, and I in you": To me, this is one of the most profound statement in the Gospel of John or in the whole Bible.  They are easy words so that a little child can understand them.

They were meant for us today, you and me, His Body, His Church.

Ruth 2 – A Love Story, Serving Naomi

Ruth 2 – A Love Story, Serving Naomi                May 12, 2018

This event actually happened and occurred in the time of the first half of Judges, around 11 century B.C.  We see Ruth faithfulness are clear implications of our Lord’s redeeming work.  Boaz, the kinsman-redeemer, point to Jesus, Ruth portrays enters new life through Jesus.

Outline of Book

Chapter 1: Love’s Resolve, Ruth staying close to Naomi

Chapter 2: Love’s Response, Serving Naomi

Chapter 3: Love’s Request, Resting

Chapter 4: Love’s Rewarded - Redemption of both Land and Bride

Ruth Chapter 1 review

A Jewish man moved his wife and 2 sons to the country of Moab from the famine in Judah.

The father and 2 sons died, leaving his wife, Naomi and 2 daughter-in-law’s left.  Naomi and Ruth moved back to Judah at the beginning of the barley harvest.

Ruth told Naomi;  Your people will be my people, and your God, my God.

This is where we left it.

Ruth serving, Meets Boaz, who is impressed with her care of Naomi

Ruth 2:1 Naomi had a close relative of her late husband, a man of considerable wealth from the family of Elimelech. His name was Boaz.

A relative just means kinsman.  This introduces an important word in the book of Ruth - the ancient Hebrew word Goel. To say that Boaz was a Goel (a kinsman, a close relative) was more than saying he was a relative; it was saying that he was a special family representative. He was a chieftain in the family, had great wealth and a man of standing.

Boaz name means In him there is strength.  As a side, Boaz name is also chosen by Solomon for one of the two pillars of the Temple.  Did the family make a wrong choice, because those in Bethlehem did not die from hunger.

The blood-relationship was with Elimelech (not with Naomi): potentially he could be the kinsman-redeemer;

We, too, have a Kinsman; one who was made like we are, yet sin-less—“holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners”.  Jesus is the one who is able to save us.

*Hebrews 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

Ruth 2:2 Ruth the Moabite told Naomi, "Please allow me to go out to the fields and glean grain behind anyone who shows me kindness." So Naomi replied, "Go ahead, my daughter."    A1

What do we mean, glean grain, This was the welfare system of those days: If you were a land owner, you were allowed to make only one pass through your field. You could not go back a second time.

The concept was that what the reapers missed, or what spilled, was left for the widows and the poor. This was a way for the poor to provide for their own needs with dignity.

*Leviticus 19:9-10 'When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. (10) And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the LORD your God.

*Leviticus 23:22 Furthermore, when you harvest the produce of your land, you are not to harvest all the way to the corners of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and resident alien. I am the LORD your God.

Ruth 2:3 So she went out {own initiative}, proceeded to the field, and gleaned behind the harvesters. And it happened that she came to the portion of land belonging to Boaz, of the family of Elimelech.  {social assistance programs in Israel} {God invisible hand at work}

Ruth 2:4 Now when Boaz arrived from Bethlehem, he told the harvesters, "The LORD be with you." "May the LORD bless you!" they replied.

This shows us something of the heart and character of Boaz on how he relates to his workers.  Apparently, his workers loved him and had a good relationship with him.  The poor able to provide own needs with dignity.

Ruth 2:5 At this point, Boaz asked the foreman of his harvesters, "To whom does this young woman belong?"  (who is the new worker)

Ruth 2:6 The foreman of the harvesters answered, "She is the Moabite who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab.

The foreman was responsible to supervise the workers, supply provisions for the reapers, and pay them at the end of the day.

Ruth 2:7 She asked us, 'Please allow me to glean what's left of the grain behind the harvesters.' So she came out and has continued working from dawn until now, except for a short time in a shelter."

This shows the submissive attitude of Ruth and how she kindly and properly asked for the right to gather in his field.  The fact that she did work and how she did it was important, because it made a good impression on Boaz.  Are we also not being watched by others on how we live?

Ruth 2:8 Boaz then addressed Ruth: "Listen, my daughter! Don't glean in any other field. Don't even leave this one, and be sure to stay close to my women servants.    A2  {stone markers separated farm land}

Boaz invitation to Ruth was extended to continue gleaning in his fields permanently. She was free to continue throughout the barley harvest, which includes March and April. She was also free to continue throughout the wheat harvest, which included May and June.

Since land was appointed by tribe and clan and family, what would have looked like a single field may have had many different tracts that belonged to various clan or family members. Stone markers would have identified the boundaries, and it would be very easy to pass from one family holding to another in what looked like one field.

The women servants are the ones who tied together the cut stalks of grain.

Ruth 2:9 Keep your eyes on the field where they are harvesting, and follow them. I have ordered my young men not to bother you, have I not? And when you are thirsty, drink from the water vessels that the young men have filled."

God was blessing Naomi through Ruth already and all because God guided her to Boaz’s field.  Ruth would find companionship among the young women and find protection and refreshment.

What was Ruth told:

1)     She was to stay in this field.

2)     She was free to follow immediately after the servant girls where the pickings would be the most numerous.

3)     His intervention and provision on her behalf.

Ruth 2:10 At this she fell prostrate, bowing low to the ground, and asked him, "Why is it that you're showing me kindness by noticing me, since I'm a foreigner?"  {she probably was ragged looking after a day of hard work}

Remember, true kindness is shown when we extend ourselves to others who, as far as we can see, have nothing to give us.  Ruth thanks Boaz for his kindness. Remember, she was a Moabites, not an Israelite. A Difference

Ruth 2:11 Boaz answered her, "It has been clearly disclosed to me all that you have done for your mother-in-law following the death of your husband--how you abandoned your father, your mother, and your own land, and came to a people you did not previously know.

In a small town life, everybody knows everybody else’s business.  It was seen and notice how Ruth’s devotion to Naomi mattered.

Ruth 2:12 May the LORD repay you for your work, and may a full reward be given you from the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge."

{Picture of care, trust, security, and protection in the land}

*Psalms 36:7 How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.

*Psalms 91:4 With his feathers he will cover you, under his wings you will find safety. His truth is your shield and armor.

Feathers can mean feathers or wing, it is used 4 times in the Scriptures, 2 Scriptures translated each way.

Ruth 2:13 She responded, "May I continue to find favor in your sight, sir, since you've been comforting me and you have spoken graciously to your servant, even though I am not one of your servants."

Ruth very polite way of saying thank you to Boaz.

Ruth 2:14 At lunchtime, Boaz invited her, "Come on over, have some food, and dip your bread in our oil and vinegar." So she sat down beside the harvesters, and he handed her some roasted grain, which she ate until she was satisfied. She kept what was left over.

Boaz personally served her with his own hands.  Ruth wanted to take some home for Naomi.  Most likely grain cake, cooked in oil.  Dip in some type of wine/vinegar.  First sign of romance, share meal, even privileged dipping.

Ruth 2:15 After she had left to glean, Boaz commanded his servants, "Allow her to glean also among the cut sheaves, and don't taunt her.

It was very unusual for a gleaner to be allowed to pick up grain this close to harvesters. They were normally permitted to glean only after the harvesters had completed all their work.

Ruth 2:16 One other thing--drop some handfuls deliberately, leaving them for her so she can gather it. And don't bother her."

They were to pull out a handful of stalks. This is the amount of grain that would be grasped with the left hand as the sickler cuts with his right hand.  The fix was in for her. This was more generous than required.  Let her work

Ruth 2:17 So Ruth gathered grain out in the field until dusk, and then threshed what she had gathered--about a week's supply of barley.

The hard surface of the threshing floor often served the needs of an entire community.  A stick or a rock would be used to beat the stalks to separate the grain from the chaff.

A sun-up to sun-down day, Ruth worked hard all day long.  This was about a five-and-one-half gallon tub (22 liters) of barley - a wonderful day’s work to people who had nothing.

Ruth 2:18 She picked up her grain and went back to town. Her mother-in-law noticed how much Ruth had gleaned and had brought back from what was left over from her lunch.

Besides all the barley grain, Ruth brought Naomi the food left over from the meal with Boaz. This was obviously a blessing for Naomi.

Ruth 2:19 So her mother-in-law quizzed her, "Where did you glean today? Where, precisely, did you work? May the one who took notice of you be blessed." So Ruth told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked. She said, "The man's name with whom I worked today is Boaz."

Ruth 2:20 Naomi replied, "May the one who hasn't abandoned his gracious love to the living or to the dead be blessed by the LORD." Naomi added, "This man is closely related to us, our related redeemer, as a matter of fact!"

Boaz is now connected with the concept of the kinsman-redeemer (Goel) who role was to help recover the tribe’s losses, including people (hunt down the killer), judicial (assisted in lawsuits); property or land (recovered the property of a family member).  Notice, Now Naomi sees more of God’s plan unfolding, so she can see better how all things are working together for good for those who love God.

Remember, God granted the land to the Israelites by lot and will be as tenants and could not sell it.  They could lease it to pay debts.  The land had to remained within the family.

*Numbers 34:13 Then Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying: "This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which the LORD has commanded to give to the nine tribes and to the half-tribe.

Ruth 2:21 Then Ruth the Moabite woman added, "He also told me 'Stay close to my young men until they have completed my entire harvest.'"

Ruth 2:22 Naomi responded to her daughter-in-law Ruth, "It is prudent, my daughter, for you to go out with his women servants, so someone won't attack you in another field."

Ruth 2:23 So Ruth continued to stay close to the young women who worked for Boaz, gathering grain until both the barley and wheat harvests were complete, all the while living with her mother-in-law.

Two important laws that we need to cover before we close today.

The barley harvest ended around in May and the wheat harvest, which continued into June.

Law of Redemption: Redeeming a Poor Man or land

Leviticus 25:47-55 "If a resident alien or traveler becomes rich, but your relative who lives next to him is so poor that he sells himself to that resident alien or traveler among you or to a member of the resident alien's family, (48) he has the right to be redeemed after he sells himself. One of his brothers may redeem him. (49) His uncle or his uncle's son may redeem him or any blood relative from his clan may redeem him. If he becomes rich, then he may redeem himself. (50) "He is to bring an accounting to the one who bought him, starting from the year he had sold himself until the year of jubilee. The price of his sale is to correspond to the number of years comparable to the time a hired servant stays with him.

(51) "If there are still many years left, he is to refund the cost of his redemption. (52) But if only a few years are left until the year of jubilee, he is to bring an accounting of the years that he is to refund for his redemption.

(53) Like a hired servant, he is to remain with him year after year, but he is not to rule over him with what you see as severity.

(54) "If he isn't redeemed by these, then he is to be set free in the year of jubilee--he and his children with him (55) because the Israelis are my servants. They're my servants, since I brought them out of the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God."

Israel belongs to God. When Joshua entered the land, it was granted to the 12 tribes. That land was to stay in that tribe. You could “sell” your land, which was really more of what we would consider a “lease” (you sold the rights to use the land for awhile).  In the year of Jubilee the land would return to the original owners.

When you sold (really a lease) your land, the title deed would also include the rules for title redemption on the back of the title deed. The law required a procedure so that if your next of kin would show up there was some procedure where he could purchase back the unused years (called “redeeming the land”).  Jubilee year.

This whole concept becomes important when you encounter the seven-sealed book, “written within and on the backside and sealed with seven seals” (Rev 5).

Law of Levirate Marriage: Deut 25:5-10

*Deuteronomy 25:5-6 "When two brothers are living together and one of them dies without leaving a son, his widow must not be married outside the family to a foreigner. Instead, the brother-in-law must go to her, take her as his wife, and by doing so perform the duty of a brother-in-law. (6) The firstborn whom she will bear will continue the name of the dead brother, so his name will not be erased from Israel.

This marriage dealt with a situation where you had a widow with no issue (husband passed away with no children).  She could go to the next of kin and put a claim on him to take her to wife to raise up children for the family.

One of the reasons was not to lose the land outside the family unit.

This is called “the Levirate Marriage.” He had to meet three conditions to make it work, we will find out.   He can take all the land of his brother, if he does it.

·      First, he had to be a near kinsman.

·      Secondly, he had to be able to perform.

·      Thirdly, he had to be willing; it was not required.

·      If he chose not to, he had to give her his shoe, a symbol of shame; he had failed to do the kinsman’s part.

Next time, we will take up chapter 3
