Book of John 18:1-23 February 18, 2023

Book of John 18:1-23                   February 18, 2023

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

John 18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered.

 The name Gethsemane omitted the garden name, at the foot of the Mount of Olives {means olive press}: Brook Kidron = “dark (black) waters.”,

This Brook Kidron was a ravine between Jerusalem and divides the Mount of Olives; a deep, dark ravine, to the northeast of Jerusalem

John 18:2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples.

Jesus accustomed was to stay on the Mount of Olives, did not hide

Luke 21:37 And in the daytime He was teaching in the temple, but at night He went out and stayed on the mountain called Olivet.

Luke 22:39 Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.

John 18:3 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

·      These soldiers were probably the experienced Roman troops stationed at the Antonia, a fortress near the temple.

·      The officers who came with the detachment were members of the temple police under the command of the Jewish council, the Sanhedrin

·      Probably around 200 men

Divine knowing all things  vs 4 – know, be aware, perceive, understand

Divine power  vs 6

Divine protection  vs 8,9

The verse said Jesus had Divine Knowledge, knowing all things

John 18:4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you want?"

“knowing all things”: Jesus knew the Messiah shall be cut off (Dan 9:26).  – know, be aware, perceive, understand

Notice, Jesus went out to the mob on His own accord, did not try to hide, maybe to keep the soldiers rushing to the disciples

Matthew 17:22-23 Now while they were staying in Galilee,

Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, (23) and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up." And they were exceedingly sorrowful.

John 18:5 They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am He." And Judas, who betrayed Him {or traitor}, also stood with them.

I am he”: Note: Here there is no “be not afraid”!   “I am” is name of Jehovah {Jesus name in the Old Testament}

Interesting, Nathanael when he heard about Jesus, said, can anything good come from Nazareth?  {John 1:46}. Nazareth had an evil name and term of reproach.  The term Jesus of Nazareth is listed at least 15 times in the New Testament.

John 18:6 Now when He said to them, "I am He," they backed away and fell to the ground.    {power}

For this moment, Jesus revealed His Devine power and threw over 200 soldiers to the ground, including Judas, on their backs.  You would think this would scare them.  {terror them}, all fell backward to the earth.  demons?

Realize this happen later with Saul of Tarsus when Saul and his companions fell to the ground by the power that Jesus has.  Acts 26:14.

This verse shows how completely Jesus surrender of himself to die was voluntary.

Matthew 26:53-54 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?  (54)  How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?"

John 18:7 Then He asked them again, "Whom are you seeking?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."

After being knocked down, the soldiers only think of executing their orders that were given, to arrest Jesus the Nazarene.

John 18:8 Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,"   {protection – or let these men go }

3rd time in this chapter, Jesus claimed to be  I am He

Jesus gave a very strong command to the soldiers, let these disciples go their way, for their protection.

The soldiers had intended to seize them all

Mark 14:51-52 Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, (52) and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.

Interesting, the soldiers were about to tie Jesus hands, but Jesus tied theirs first.

John 18:9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, "Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none."

John 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

John 18:10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

It was unlawful to carry a weapon on a feast day; two swords present.

Luke 22:38 So they said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." And He {Jesus} said to them, "It is enough."   {who had the 2nd swords}

His sword was 18” long; weighed 5 lbs. Thick, not sharp: designed

for splitting helmeted skulls

Jesus saved Peter’s life with another command to the soldiers

Luke 22:51 But Jesus answered and said, "Permit even this." And He touched his ear and healed him.

As a side, this was Jesus’ last miracle before the cross. No one ever died in Jesus’ presence.

John 18:11 So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?"  {only one sword came out}

Luke 22:42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."

What Cup – what Jesus has to do and He agonized over His approaching death.  The cup is a figure of speech to what is going to happen.

Psalms 11:6 Upon the wicked He will rain coals; Fire and brimstone and a burning wind Shall be the portion of their cup.

Jesus had 6 different trials, 3 Jewish Trials, and 3 Roman Trials

Jewish Trials:

Before Annas                  John 18:12-14

Before Caiaphas             John 18:19-24

Before the Sanhedrin      Matthew 27:1, 2

Roman Trails:

Before Pilate                  John 18:28-38

Before Herod                  Luke 23:6-11

Before Pilate                  John 18:39 - 19:16

Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas, first 2 trials

John 18:12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.

According to Jewish law it was unlawful to bind a prisoner before judgment.

A captain was the chief officer of a Roman soldiers.

Annas served from A.D. 6-15; deposed by Pilate’s predecessor, Valerius Gratus. However, he was still influential; vice-president of the Sanhedrin and patriarch of a family that held the office of the high priest as late as A.D. 62, including 5 sons and a son-in-law.

Romans appointed Caiaphas (each year; Act 4:6) vs. Law of God, until death (Ex 40:15; Num 35:25, etc.).

Many Jews resented the Roman intrusions into their office; still looked to Annas, not Caiaphas, as their “real” High Priest.

Matthew 26:49-50 Immediately he {Judas} went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed Him.  (50)  But Jesus said to him, "Friend, why have you come?" Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.  {Jesus just said, friend}

John 18:13 And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.

“led him away”: Led to the priest The judge had given his verdict and determined the sentence before the trial took place.

John 18:14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus

John 18:15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.

Most people presume this “another disciple” was John.  Others think not.

John was a fisherman of Galilee, not Jerusalem; and as a Galilean he would have been recognized as Peter was  (Mt 26:69,73).

Also, John always refers to himself as the disciple “whom Jesus loved”

And according to Acts 4:13, the high priest was not personally acquainted with either Peter or John. Who then? Nicodemus? Joseph of Arimathea?

John 18:16 But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.

Damsel that kept the door”: It was a common custom to have a female doorkeeper (Acts 12:13 – Peter, upper room).

John 18:17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."

Mark 14:66 Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came.

This was the first of Peter’s three denials prophesied by Jesus

Mark 14:68 But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are saying." And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.

John 18:18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.

Before Caiaphas: John 18:19-24

The High Priest Questions Jesus

John 18:19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

Was Caiaphas trying to ensnare Him into some statement to be used against Jesus at the trial? His doctrine; disciples; etc.

This was not a true trial since the Sanhedrin had not been assembled. The purpose of this questioning was to gather evidence and was interested in Jesus’s disciples and His doctrine..

The charge on which they wished to arraign him was that of sedition, or of rebellion against Caesar.

John 18:20 Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing.

Jesus spoke openly, not in secret (Isa 45:19) vs. a closed trial. Jesus had not founded a secret society.

John 18:21 Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said."

According to the law, the witnesses for the defense had to be called first. Jesus should not have been questioned until witnesses had testified

John 18:22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?"

“...struck Jesus with the palm of his hand”: He was entitled to be protected by judges; there is none.

This was illegal according to Jewish law. There was to be no punishment before conviction

John 18:23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?"

Jesus invited His accusers to present evidence that He had done something wrong.

Matthew 5:39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

Jesus is being examined and gives His own illustration or understanding of His own teaching; to exclude personal retaliation does not exclude calm protest and rebuke.  Interesting

Miracles of Satan apostles and workers February 11, 2023

Miracles of Satan apostles and workers     February 11, 2023

Last time, the question came up, can Satan apostles and workers perform miracles like the Lord Jesus Apostles and workers.

I guess, what does it mean to be an apostle and what is a miracle.

Ask everyone.  Bible definition from Strongs, of both.

Miracle G4592 sēmeion say-mi'-on

an indication, especially ceremonially or supernaturally: - miracle, sign, token, wonder.

Apostle G652 apostolos; means a delegate; specifically an ambassador of the Gospel; officially a commissioner of Christ (“apostle”), (with miraculous powers): - apostle, messenger, he that is sent.

Test - pi-rad'-zo: G3985; to test (objectively), that is, endeavor, scrutinize, entice, discipline: - assay, examine, go about, prove, tempt (-er), try.

Sin - ham-ar-tan'-o: G264 (as a negative particle); properly to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize), that is, (figuratively) to err, especially (morally) to sin: - for your faults, offend, sin, trespass.

We should point out that we are talking about 2 different class or group of individuals and a third group.  Ones who were baptize and had the Laying of Hands on and received the Holy Spirit.  These Scriptures are for them or us.  The other are the Satan leaders of religious groups who does miracles, and their membership are blinded by Satan.

Satan has the power to perform miracles and is the "father of lies" and wants nothing more than to deceive.

John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

Satan has his own apostles and workers.  The devil is sneaky and can even transform himself into an angel of light.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.  (14)  And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.  (15)  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

What does this really mean.  Does this explain why all major religions have had miracles reported by their followers, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, various Christian groups, etc. I looked many up and each has miracles in their teachings.

I would say, are these miracles "real"? Yes, by all means. But are they from the one, true Holy Spirit of God? No.

The Apostle Paul warns that Satan and his false apostles and deceitful workers disguises himself as an angel of light.  Demon based miracles are real, and it's important to know that just because a miracle happens does not mean it is of God.

Test the Spirits. This is one of the reasons John instructs believers to "test" the spirits because of demon miracles:

What does it mean to test the spirit.  We have our own opinion.

1 John 4:1-2 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.  (2)  This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

That person’s belief agrees with the with the truth of God’s Word.

{1 John 2:22 – denies that Jesus is the Messiah; 1 Cor 12:3 – speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed or can say Jesus is Lord}

1 John 4:3-4 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.  (4)  You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you {Lord Jesus} is greater than the one who {Satan} is in the world.

So, what does this really mean.  Someone may claim to be in God and perform miracles, but if their teaching is in opposition to God's Word, or if they refuse to confess Jesus Christ as Lord, their miracles are demonic, because they are not coming from the right Spirit.

So what things are a test from the Scriptures. We need to know.

How do we really test them, are they following the commands of Jesus, are they following the Way of Life that Jesus taught and followed Himself, Is the Sabbath as test, Feast Days a test, abortion:

same-sex marriages just received blessing from Church of England.

The real test is to compare what is being taught with the clear teaching of the Bible. The Bible alone is the Word of God; it alone is inspired and inerrant. Therefore, the way to test the spirits is to see if what is being taught is in line with the clear teaching of Scripture, not what some person says. The Scriptures alone is the standard by which all truth must be judged.

Remember Paul blinded someone, it was hard to believe.  Do you realize, our guardian angels can also blind people and do miracles.

Genesis 19:1 The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.

Genesis 19:11 Then they {Angels of Lot} struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door.

They blinded the people.

Our guardian angels can destroy places with fire.

Genesis 19:13 because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it."

Genesis 19:24-25 Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah; from the LORD out of the heavens.  (25)  Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities; and also the vegetation in the land.

If guardian angels can do this, what about demons doing miracles.

Remember, when Moses and Aaron went to deliver God’s message to Pharaoh, they performed a miracle.

Exodus 7:10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake.

Egyptian magi were able to perform the exact same miracle

Exodus 7:11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts:

God's miracle was proven to be the most powerful.

Exodus 7:12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs.

The main point to note is that the magicians or religious leaders were readily, able to mimic a God-ordained miracle with a satanic miracle.

Did not Lord Jesus warned about false prophets in the end times who "will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive.

Matthew 24:24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

Paul told the Thessalonians that, Though Satan does not have the ability to perform genuine miracles, he is able to produce counterfeit miracles or lying wonders.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the power of Satan. He will use every kind of power, including miraculous signs, lying wonders, (10) and every type of evil to deceive those who are dying, those who refused to love the truth that would save them.

These are deceptive works - not the real thing.

We should be aware of the reality of demon / satan miracles so as not to be deceived by false teachers.

Demon / Satan miracles are real and they happen on a regular basis. There is no need for us to be fearful of demon miracles.

But this also doesn't mean we can turn a blind eye to them. As believers in Jesus Christ, we must remain ready in our discernment and "test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil" so that we do not give into the charms of a false spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22  but test them all; hold on to what is good,  (22)  reject every kind of evil.

Did you hear or see this, this was on display the other night, February 05, 2023, the 65th Grammy awards.  Devil-horned Sam Smith, 'hellkeeper' Kim Petras' satanic 'Unholy' performance outrages viewers, 'Mocking Christianity;' This music industry’s biggest night took an “Unholy” turn Sunday.  It was bad.  Devil worshipper people, in present and at home, saying it was good and fun.

Revelation 13:2 Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.

Revelation 13:7 It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation.  {granted like Job}

Revelation 13:12-13 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.  (13)  He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.

What about the attack on Job from Satan, but you remember, Satan had to have the approval or permission by God to do it.  So, we know Satan can bring down fire from heaven and control the wind.

Job 1:12 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

Job 1:16 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you!"

Job 1:18-19 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house,  (19)  when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

So Satan does control fire and wind.

Revelation 13:14 And deceives them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

Revelation 16:13-14 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.  (14)  For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

Dragon – Satan, beast – head of the military, false prophet – spiritual leader

Why frogs:  plague of frogs in Egypt.  {Exo 8:5};  Remember the frogs went everywhere, bedrooms, kitchen, etc. dirty, stir up for war and bloodshed

Revelation 19:20  And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Beast, false prophet, Real people

These verses we just covered demonstrate that the devil is active in producing miracles as a means of deception.

A miracle is something that is distinctive and supernatural. This could be from a source that is either good (from God) or evil (from the devil). This is why we must try the spirits to see their source.  Only those from God will be speaking according to Lord Jesus Word.

Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Therefore, we must be able to discern spiritual things.

1 Corinthians 2:13-14 These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.  (14)  But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The study of God’s Word will help us divide what is true from what is false.

2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

What is really all about with miracles, it does not matter what or who does the miracle, if the person does not teach what the Scriptures teach, it is not of God, but of the devil or his workers.

Sin just means, miss the mark. The Holy Spirit will always direct us towards Lord Jesus and direct us in that direction.   {North, West direction}

Finally, remember that Demon based miracles are real and they do occur, and it's important to know that just because a miracle happens does not mean it is of God.

It is our responsibility to make sure that we do not give in to them. We must keep our Bibles open and study daily and put God’s revealed truth ahead of any miracle we may see.

With all this we covered, the Scriptures are talking about the leaders of groups, workers who teach and does miracles.   Their members are blinded by Satan.  God will hold these people responsible.  {2 Cor 4:4}

{Rom 11:7}

This is a warning for all Christians {you and me} who has the Holy Spirit in them, if possible, even the elect will be deceive without understanding the Scriptures and testing the workers over their miracles.  What do they really teach.  We have to understand.

Apostles Miracles in Acts February 04, 2023

 Apostles Miracles in Acts                       February 04, 2023

We are covering the miracles of our Lord Jesus, were 1000’s are following Jesus, after His death, most left Him, with only 120 in the upper room for the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was given.

We know the Apostles did miracles, but what were they.  Do any come to mind.  With so much sickness today, healing is an important thing in life.

The Apostle Paul's ran from his calling and conversion in 33 A.D. to his death as a martyr around May or June in 68 A.D, before the fall of Jerusalem.  Paul served about 35 years, probably into His late 60’s to early 70’s of age.   During this period God performed many miracles, signs and wonders through Paul, Peter, John and the other Apostles to confirm what was taught to him from the Lord Jesus.

In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus blessed His apostles with the ability to heal sickness and expel evil forces.

Matthew 10:1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.  Verse 2 calls them Apostles.

Luke 9:1 Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.

Notice Matthew added sickness and Luke added authority, so we know what the Apostles were able to do. What about the writer in the Book of James

James 5:14-15 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.  (15)  And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Apostle Peter heals lame man since birth at the gate of the Temple

Acts 3:6-7 Then Peter said, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk."  (7)  And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. {Name of Jesus}

Apostle Peter around with the death of Ananias and Sapphire

Acts 5:3-6 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?  (4)  While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."  (5)  Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.  (6)  And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.

Acts 5:7-11 Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.  (8)  And Peter answered her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?" She said, "Yes, for so much."  (9)  Then Peter said to her, "How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out."  (10)  Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. (11) So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

The Apostles did many signs and wonders

Acts 5:12-16 And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's Porch.  (13)  Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly.  (14)  And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,  (15)  so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them.

(16)  Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.  {added because of signs and wonders}

The Apostles Peter and John conferred the Holy Spirit

Acts 8:14-17 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them,  (15)  who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.  (16)  For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  (17)  Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.  {Samaria?}

The Apostle Peter heals Aeneas who was bedridden eight years and was paralyzed

Acts 9:33-34 There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed.  (34)  And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed." Then he arose immediately.

The Apostle Peter raised Tabitha (Dorcas) from the dead

Acts 9:40-41 But Peter put them all out, and knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, "Tabitha, arise." And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up.  (41)  Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive.

The Apostle Paul received a miracle by removing his blindness

Acts 9:17-18 And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."  (18)  Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.

Notice, Ananias called Saul, brother Saul.  It is used in the Scriptures and in some way hard to say it.

Apostle Paul blinded a wicked man for a time

Acts 13:9-12 Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him {Elymas} (10)  and said, "O full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord?  (11)  And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time." And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand.  (12)  Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had been done, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord. {Tradition had Barnabas killed because of Elymas}

Apostle Paul signs and wonders, people believed in Jesus - miracles

Acts 14:3 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.

Such as healing the sick, curing the lame, casting out devils; and the like, whereby a testimony was given to the truth of the doctrine they preached: and it may be observed,

What about Paul miracle of the cripple man at Lystra

Acts 14:8-10 And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother's womb, who had never walked.  (9)  This man heard Paul speaking. Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed,  (10)  said with a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your feet!" And he leaped and walked.

These circumstances are mentioned, to show that his case was incurable by any human art, and to illustrate the following miracle.

Paul Stoned at Lystra, miracle brought Paul back to life

Acts 14:19-20 Then Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there; and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.  (20)  However, when the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and went into the city. And the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

Apostle Paul cast out unclean spirit, a demon

Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling.  (17)  This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation."  (18)  And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.

Apostle Paul miracle released from prison

Acts 16:25-26  About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.  (26)  Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose.

Apostle Paul raised Eutychus from the Dead

Acts 20:9-12 And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead.  (10)  But Paul went down, fell on him, and embracing him said, "Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him."  (11)  Now when he had come up, had broken bread and eaten, and talked a long while, even till daybreak, he departed.  (12)  And they brought the young man in alive, and they were not a little comforted.

Apostle Paul shakes off a viper

Acts 28:3-6 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on his hand.  (4)  So when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, "No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet justice does not allow to live."

(5)  But he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm.  (6)  However, they were expecting that he would swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had looked for a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

Apostle Paul healed Publius father

Acts 28:7-8 In that region there was an estate of the leading citizen of the island, whose name was Publius, who received us and entertained us courteously for three days.  (8)  And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Paul went in to him and prayed, and he laid his hands on him and healed him.

Apostle Paul healed many on Malta

Acts 28:9 So when this was done, the rest of those on the island who had diseases also came and were healed.

Let’s look at Acts 19, interesting things to find out about Apostle Paul

Apostle Paul laid hands on 12 men filled them with Holy Spirit

Acts 19:1-2 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples  (2)  and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."

Acts 19:3-5 So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied.  (4)  Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus."  (5)  On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

This tells us what John baptism was all about.

Acts 19:6-7 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.  (7)  There were about twelve men in all.

Acts 19:8-9 And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of God.  (9)  But when some were hardened {Jews} and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

The name Tyrannus means “our tyrant” is a common one.  It is an inscription as that of a physician in the court. A suggestion the possibility that a relative of this physician was lecturing on medicine in Ephesus and so as a friend of Luke, the physician, would be glad to help Paul with a place to preach.

It was probably a public building or lecture hall with this name whether hired by Paul or loaned to him. A pagan teacher often spoke in such halls.

Acts 19:10 And this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

Apostle Paul unusual miracles from God

Acts 19:11-12 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul,  (12)  so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.

Acts 19:13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, "In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out."

Note the article, “the Jesus,” as if to identify the magic word to the demons with the addition “whom Paul preaches.” They thought that success turned on the correct use of the magical formula.

Acts 19:14-15 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.  (15)  One day the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?"

This is interesting, the demon world knows about the Apostle Paul

Acts 19:16-18 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.  (17)  When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.  (18)  Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done.

Acts 19:19-20 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.  (20)  In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power..

Looking At the Apostles miracles, they included miracles, healings, casting out demon, and raising of the dead and they were done to get people attention so the message about Lord Jesus could be given.

Something to think about, all the people who experience the miracles of Jesus, only 120 was at Pentecost.  Belief in Lord Jesus is far deeper than miracles.

As we close, some general thought.

Satan has power to do miracles through his apostles and workers

Acts 8:19-20 saying, "Give me {Simon} this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit."  (20)  But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money!

This tells me that Satan cannot give the Holy Spirit to anyone.  It is a gift from the Father.

They do this to draw people away from the Lord Jesus

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the power of Satan. He will use every kind of power, including miraculous signs, lying wonders,  (10)  and every type of evil to deceive those who are dying, those who refused to love the truth that would save them.

Revelation 13:2 Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.

Revelation 13:7 It was granted to him {Beast} to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation.  {granted like Job}
