Make Me a Sanctuary, a Request from God - www.seachord.org

Make Me a Sanctuary, a Request from God       October 24, 2020

Jesus wanted to be among His chosen people.

Exodus 25:8 And let them {people of Israel} make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.

God asked His chosen people, Israel, to make a sanctuary for Him.

Deuteronomy 14:2 {Israel} because you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD chose to make you his precious possession from among all the peoples of the earth.

What do we mean by Sanctuary?  A refuge, a safe place, holy place, a church or temple, most sacred part of the holy building,

We read this in Exodus, what comes to mind.  God wanted a Sanctuary for Himself to dwell with His appointed people.  A portable Tabernacle

Exodus 25:1-9 The LORD told Moses, (2) "Tell the Israelis to take an offering for me, and you are to accept my offering from every person whose heart moves him to give. (3) This is the offering that you are to accept from them: gold, silver, and bronze; (4) blue, purple, and scarlet material; fine linen and goat hair; (5) ram skins dyed red, dolphin skins, and acacia wood; (6) oil for lighting, spices for the anointing oil and for aromatic incense; (7) onyx stones, stones for setting on the ephod and the breast piece. (8) Let them make a sanctuary for me so I may dwell among them. (9) This is how you are to make it: according to all that I'm showing you, according to the pattern for the tent and the pattern for all its furnishings."

The Lord wanted to Tabernacle among the people so He could dwell among them.  The people made a Tabernacle at first and then a Temple later.  Among them, not in them as we have.

When The Lord created the world, it was very good and in His goodness,.

Genesis 1:31 Now God saw all that he had made, and indeed, it was very good! The twilight and the dawn were the sixth day.

He wanted to share this goodness with others and in order to do this God needed to create something, which could receive His goodness.

This something, to receive God’s goodness, was man and women, who has the ability to live his life in accordance to God’s will.

Genesis 2:7 So the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground, breathed life {Spirit in man} into his lungs, and the man became a living being.

Remember Exodus 25:8; make Me a sanctuary and I will dwell among them.

Basically, the words “Make Me a Sanctuary” is not an ultimate commandment, or a statement or order that cannot be opposed, but more of a request so God can dwell among them.

It is an attitude concern, if you build something for me, then I will dwell among you and will give you instructions on how to build it.  The Tabernacle and Temple has detail building instructions in the Scriptures.

Exodus 35:5 'Take from among yourselves an offering for the LORD. Everyone whose heart is willing is to bring it as an offering for the LORD: gold, silver, and bronze;

Exodus 35:21 and every person whose heart moved him and all whose spirits prompted them, brought an offering to the LORD for constructing the Tent of Meeting, for all its service, and for the holy garments.

Deuteronomy 7:6-8 because you are a holy people to the LORD your God. The LORD your God chose you to be his people, his treasured possession from all the peoples on the face of the earth."

(7) "It was not because you were more numerous than other people of the earth that the LORD committed himself to you and chose you. In fact, you were the least numerous of all the peoples.

(8) But the LORD loved you and kept his oath that he made to your ancestors. The LORD brought you out with great power from slavery, from the control of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

This is was done only if they were inspired to do so out of the generosity of their own heart, something which really cannot be compelled, even by God.  A free will or free moral agency we have.

God created our world because by His pure desire to do so, having Israel called upon to create a world for God to reside in, within our world.  Man’s will is coming together with God’s will, and the desire to build Him a house because we have free will to do so or not to do.

Solomon  prayer to the Lord about the Temple construction.

1 Kings 8:27 and yet, will God truly reside on earth? Look! Neither the sky nor the highest heaven can contain you! How much less this Temple that I have built!

Interesting question.

Creating for God a space from which God can reside, Jesus can come in and leave at will.

Shekinah or Glory of the Lord fills the Tabernacle, which is also in us

Exodus 40:34-35 The cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the Glory of the LORD filled the tent. (35) Moses was not able to enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the Glory of the LORD filled the tent.     Shekinah is another name for the Glory of the Lord

Tent or Tabernacle

Shekinah or Glory of the Lord fills the Temple, which is also in us

2 Chronicles 5:13-14 the trumpeters and musicians played in union, praising and giving thanks to the LORD. They praised the LORD loudly and sang, "He is good, and his gracious love is eternal," accompanied by the trumpets, cymbals, and other musical instruments.) As they did this, a cloud filled the Temple, that is, the LORD's Temple, (14) and the priests were unable to complete their duties because of the cloud, since the glory of the LORD had filled God's Temple.

Glory of the Lord Leaves the Temple

Ezekiel 10:18 Then the glory of the LORD moved away from the threshold of the Temple and stood over the cherubim.

Deuteronomy 23:14 For the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and give your enemies over to you; therefore your camp shall be holy, that He may see no unclean thing among you, and turn away from you.

God created the world so that God could fill that world with His Presence.

The problem is that Adam ate the one fruit of the one tree in the Garden of Eden he was told not to eat, because of free will.

Genesis 3:17 Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life.

Adam could have lived in peace, but decided not to.  Israel is a blessing to all nations on the earth, showing man and God can dwell as one.

Wondering:  Food from the ground, not from trees??

Genesis 28:14 Your descendants {Israel} are going to become like the dust of the earth and spread out to the west, east, north, and south. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants.

This is what was covered in the Old Testament.  What about today.

Jesus said the Kingdom of God is within you {or among you}

Luke 17:20-21 Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come. He answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with a visible display. (21) People won't be saying, 'Look! Here it is!' or 'There it is!' because now the kingdom of God is among you."

Jesus said to the Pharisees, among you, to a Christian, it would be within you.  Why, because of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

2 Corinthians 6:15-18 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial {heathen good}? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?  (16)  What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people."  (17)  Therefore, "Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you."  (18)  And, "I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

Ephesians 2:19-22 That is why you are no longer strangers and foreigners but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household, (20) having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, the Messiah Jesus himself being the cornerstone. (21) In union with him the whole building is joined together and rises into a holy sanctuary for the Lord. (22) You, too, are being built in him, along with the others, into a place for God's Spirit to dwell.

1 Peter 2:5 you, too, as living stones, are building yourselves up into a spiritual house and a holy priesthood, so that you may offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus, the Messiah.

Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.

Proverbs 20:27 A person's spirit is the lamp of the LORD; it searches throughout one's innermost being.

Only “man” has the “spirit of man” The spirit of man makes us truly human and allows us to have understanding, and to think and reason at the higher human level instead of at the lower level of animals.

Humans are created in God’s image, are created physical, while God is spirit, humans are created after God’s likeness, not only in our ability to think, reason and create, but also in our shape and appearance.

Humans do not look like fish or insects or four-legged animals. Humans look like our Eternal Father.

The Holy Spirit is only available to humans and to no other living thing. The Holy Spirit is made available to those whom God calls, who repent, are baptized, have hands laid on them to receive the Holy Spirit.

Only humans can be baptized and receive the Holy Spirit and it is the Holy Spirit in us, Spiritually, we are able to obey God and keep His laws, showing our love for Him.  Humans to show our love for love of God is to keep His commandments.

When people die, we are not conscious, and our spirits are not immortal. God does keep our spirit {spirit in man and the new creation} while we “sleep” in death, preserved for the judgment or change at Jesus Return.

As humans, with the spirit in man in them and or able to receive the Holy Spirit, we can be born or changed into the Family of God.

This is not available to animals. This is only available to humans.

God had made the Holy Spirit available to Adam, because of Adam’s rebellion and taking of the forbidden fruit, God had driven Adam out and closed all access to the tree of Life, symbol of His Holy Spirit until a future time.

Jesus explains to us

John 3:6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

John 16:13-15 Yet when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own accord, but will speak whatever he hears and will declare to you the things that are to come. (14) He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. (15) All that the Father has is mine. That is why I said, 'He will take what is mine and declare it to you.'

Revelation 21:3-4 I heard a loud voice from the throne say, "See, the tent of God {Tabernacle} is among humans! He will make his home with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them, and he will be their God. (4) He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There won't be death anymore. There won't be any grief, crying, or pain, because the first things have disappeared."

Our bodies are a temporary tent, tabernacle holding the Holy Spirit

The good news about all of this, Jesus is physical and spiritual at same time

1 Corinthians 15:52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

Romans 8:9 You, however, are not under the control of the human nature but under the control of the Spirit, since God's Spirit lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of the Messiah, he does not belong to him.

Romans 8:10-11 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.  (11)  And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

These verses explains how we are physical and spiritual at the same time.

We know a spirit of mankind exists in mankind.

1 Corinthians 2:10 But God has revealed those things to us by his Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the deep things of God.

2 Corinthians 1:22 who has placed his seal on us and has given us the Spirit in our hearts as a down payment.  (we are sealed)

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!

We are still human, but we are different from those in the world, because we are the Temple of the Holy Spirit and have Jesus living in us and we are called saints of the Most High.

John 14:20 At that time you will know that I am in my Father, that you are in me, and that I am in you.  (Jesus lives in us)

We have just covered that the old nature (spirit in man) needs to be replaced with a new heart. It cannot be fixed.  Then we are God’s children.

Ezekiel 36:26 "I'm going to give you a new heart, and I'm going to give you a new spirit within all of your deepest parts. I'll remove that rock-hard heart of yours and replace it with one that's sensitive to me.

(new heart – new spirit)

Not to repair the heart, but replace it with a new heart

John 1:12-13 However, to all who received him, those believing in his name, he gave authority to become God's children, (13) who were born, not merely in a genetic sense, nor from lust, nor from man's desire, but from the will of God

Romans 8:9 You, however, are not under the control of the human nature but under the control of the Spirit, since God's Spirit lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of the Messiah, he does not belong to him.

What are we seal with?

Ephesians 1:13-14 You, too, have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed in the Messiah, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, (14) who is the guarantee of our inheritance until God redeems his own possession for his praise and glory.   (sealed with the promised Holy Spirit)

Just meditate on these facts that God lives in you this week.

If you prayerfully remind yourself that you are a temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you, it will transform the way you look at yourself. And it will transform the way you see God’s purpose for your life.

Cornelius and Peter’s Sermon October 17, 2020 - seachord.org

Cornelius and Peter’s Sermon         October 17, 2020

We have covered in detail several different individuals in the Scriptures and today we will cover another one, Cornelius, Roman Centurion, who was the Gentile, First Fruits of Believers and then Peter’s sermon about the Gospel of Jesus.

Cornelius – What do we know about him

·      A Centurion or Captain, officer in the Roman Army

·      Being Roman would have made him hated by any patriotic Jew

·      A Roman name, was a Roman or Italian

·      Had 100 men under him, Soldiers collected out of Italy

·      Hence the band took its name

·      He and his family were God-fearers, one who feared and Loved God

·      He stopped short of becoming full Jews in lifestyle and circumcision

·      He was a Gentile, but had a real relationship with God

·      He was not circumcised, uncircumcised Jews would not associate with

·      One of 3 centurions named favorably in New Testament

·      Julius {Acts 27:1-3} centurion at the cross

·      Centurion who built the synagogue at Capernaum {Luke 7:2}

·      Did he learn about salvation and faith and Jesus from Philip, the Deacon.

·      Opening the doors to the Gentiles, became first fruits

Caesarea

Chief seaport of Palestine, on shores of Mediterranean Sea

The Roman Capital: civil government, great seaport, which Paul used

Rome military headquarters

Let us look at a sermon by the Apostle Peter that he gave in the home of Cornelius, a Roman Officer, under Herod Agrippa.  This sermon was about 200 words in all and less than five minutes long; but covers the Gospel of Jesus, the Messiah.  Acts 10:34-43

Peter sermon covers the Gospel of Jesus:

Jesus went to Israel with the good news

·      The baptism that John preached

·      Jesus was anointed with Holy Spirit and power

·      Jesus death by hanging on the cross

·      God raised him from the dead

·      Witnesses who saw Jesus after rose from the dead

·      His coming again as the Judge of the quick and the dead; and

·      The Apostles were to preach to the people

·      Jesus to judge the living and the dead

·      Prophets testify who believes will receives forgiveness of sins through Jesus name.

Apostle Paul summary of the Gospel of Jesus; or message; did he received it from Peter??

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I passed on to you the most important points that I received: The Messiah died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (4) he was buried, he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures--and is still alive!

How did this happen, The Book of Acts now shifts from the Jews to the Gentiles.  This was about 8 – 10 years after Pentecost.   Jesus had Peter to become the door opener to the Gentiles into the Church.

Acts 10:1 Now in Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.

This Caesarea is on the coast, the headquarters for the Roman establishment.  Regiment composed of about 6000 men, on call by the Roman procurator that he could depend upon, his bodyguard.  This chapter in Acts is the only place Cornelius is mention.

Acts 10:2 He was a devout man who feared God, as did everyone in his home. He gave many gifts to the poor among the people and always prayed to God.

A Gentile who feared God, supported the poor and always in prayer to the One Lord God.

Acts 10:3 One day about three in the afternoon he had a vision and clearly saw an angel of God coming to him and saying to him, "Cornelius!"

An Angel came to Cornelius, a Gentile, where they had a conversation

Vision: G3705 – means spectacle, supernatural

Acts 10:4 He stared at the angel in terror and asked, "What is it, Lord?" The angel answered him, "Your prayers and your gifts to the poor have arisen as a reminder to God.

Interesting, a Gentile prayer are all accepted before God if they fear God and do physical things for the poor. The angel came in the daylight and not in a trance, but a vision, totally awake.  I think we all would be in terror if an Angel came to us.

Acts 10:5 Send men now to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter.

Joppa is about 30 miles away, south of Caesarea. Right then, Cornelius did what the Angel told him to do.

Acts 10:6 He is a guest of Simon, a leatherworker, whose house is by the sea."

Jesus had to cut away Peter’s prejudices by having him stay for many days not only with a Gentile, but with one whose trade Peter likely considered repulsive.  A Roman soldier.

Acts 10:7 When the angel who had spoken to him had gone, Cornelius summoned two of his household servants and a devout soldier, one of those who served him regularly.

The fact that Cornelius readily obeyed the angel is a sign of how much he desired and was open to the truth.

Acts 10:8 He explained everything to them and sent them to Joppa.

Acts 10:9 Around noon the next day, while they were on their way and coming close to the town, Peter went up on the roof to pray.

Acts 10:10 He became very hungry and wanted to eat, and while the food was being prepared, he fell into a trance

Trance: G1611 – means displacement of the mind, amazement

Acts 10:11 and saw heaven open and something like a large linen sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners to the ground.

Acts 10:12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals, reptiles, and birds of the air.

Acts 10:13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter! Kill something and eat it."

Jesus just told him to eat,

Acts 10:14 But Peter said, "Absolutely not, Lord, for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean!"

Clean and unclean foods, but we will find out later that Jesus was not talking about food, but not to call any man or woman common or unclean.

Acts 10:15 Again the voice came to him a second time, "You must stop calling unclean what God has made clean."

Acts 10:16 This happened three times. Then the sheet was quickly taken back into heaven.

Why 3 times, could it be that Jesus want Peter to remember that Peter denied Jesus 3 times and what it entails.

Acts 10:17 While Peter was still at a loss to know what the vision he had seen could mean, the men sent by Cornelius asked for Simon's house and went to the gate.

Vs. 28 answer this question,  Peter had to overcome His prejudice against Gentiles and carry the message of Jesus to the Gentiles.

Acts 10:18 They called out and asked if Simon who was called Peter was staying there.

Acts 10:19 Peter was still thinking about the vision when the Spirit told him, "Look! Three men are looking for you.

Acts 10:20 Get up, go downstairs, and don't hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them."

Not only did he have a vision, but the Spirit was talking to him.

Acts 10:21 So Peter went to the men and said, "I'm the man you're looking for. Why are you here?"

Why are the hated Gentiles looking for me, who are unclean before God.

Acts 10:22 The men replied, "Cornelius, a centurion and an upright and God-fearing man who is respected by the whole Jewish nation, was instructed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his home to hear what you have to say."

These Gentiles told Peter, a Roman Soldier was told directly by an Angel of God to have you come to His home.  Peter had no choice, but to go.

Acts 10:23 So Peter welcomed them as his guests. The next day he got up and went with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along with him.

So Peter, welcome these Gentiles into his home, then prepared to leave the next day.

Ten men journeyed: two household servants and a soldier; the apostle Peter; and six Christian Jews (Acts 11:12). Ten is the number of witness:

30 miles walk they took to Cornelius home from Joppa to Caesarea

Acts 10:24 The next day they arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called his relatives and close friends together.

On their journey, one day and part of another day.  Cornelius with his family and friends, did not doubt that Peter will be at his home the next day

Acts 10:25 When Peter was about to enter, Cornelius met him, bowed down at his feet, and began to worship him.

How much did a Gentile, Cornelius, wanted to learn.

Acts 10:26 But Peter made him get up, saying, "Stand up! I, too, am only a man."

Peter just told him, you do not worship me, only Jesus you worship.

Acts 10:27 As Peter talked with him, he went in and found that many people had gathered.

Quite a group was forming: Peter’s ten and Cornelius’ family and friends.  Remember, a Jew is not even supposed to enter the house of a Gentile; this was probably the first time that Peter had ever been in a Gentile house, not sure.  Being around this many Gentiles.

Acts 10:28 He told them, "You understand how wrong it is for a Jew to associate or visit with a gentile. But God has shown me that I should stop calling anyone common or unclean,

Peter eyes and mind was open, the prejudice was gone.  This shows Peter finally understood the vision, do not call a Gentile unclean.

It was not about food, people who are future Saints.

Acts 10:29 and that is why I didn't hesitate when I was sent for. Now may I ask why you sent for me?"

Notice, Peter realize this about Gentiles, but he did not understand why he sent for Peter.

Acts 10:30 Cornelius replied, "Four days ago at this very hour, three o'clock in the afternoon, I was praying in my home. All at once a man in radiant clothes stood in front of me

Angel was in radiant, bright, and or shining clothes or robe,

Acts 10:31 and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard. God has remembered your gifts to the poor

Gifts to the poor and your Gentiles prayers, Jesus remembers

Acts 10:32 so send messengers to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter, to come to you. He is a guest in the home of Simon, a leatherworker, by the sea.'

Acts 10:33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. All of us are here now in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has ordered you to say."

Now this is the start of Peter Sermon

Gentiles will now Hear the Good News and the Gospel of Jesus from Peter

Acts 10:34 Then Peter began to speak: "Now I understand that God shows no partiality.

Interesting, now and only now, shows that Jesus shows not partiality for individuals, Jews or Gentiles

Acts 10:35 Indeed, whoever fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him {Jesus} in any nation.

If anyone from any nation, fears God and does what is acceptable to Jesus.

Acts 10:36 He has sent his word to the descendants of Israel and brought them the good news of peace through Jesus the Messiah. This man {Jesus} is the Lord of everyone.

First, Jesus went to Israel and then to the rest of the world.

Acts 10:37 You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached.

John baptism was one of repentance and the one who is coming later

Acts 10:38 God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, he went around doing good and healing everyone who was oppressed by the devil.

John 3:34-35 The one whom God sent speaks the words of God, because God does not give the Spirit in limited measure to him. (35) The Father loves the Son and has put everything in his hands.

Acts 10:39 We are witnesses of everything Jesus did in the land of the Jews, including Jerusalem. "They hung him on a tree and killed him,

The Apostles were witnesses of Jesus death on the cross

Acts 10:40 but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear

The Apostles were witnesses of Jesus resurrection to life

Acts 10:41 not to all the people, but to us who were chosen by God to be witnesses and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

Acts 10:42 He also ordered us to preach to the people and to testify solemnly that this is the one appointed by God to be the judge of the living and the dead.

Acts 10:43 All the prophets testify to this: everyone who believes in Jesus receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

Notice that Peter is talking to a Gentile group, Jesus had him to open the door to the Gospel of Jesus to them.

This the end of Peter Sermon, a miracle then just happens

Acts 10:44 While Peter was still making this statement, the Holy Spirit fell on all the people who were listening to his message.

Same thing happened at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came on them like laying on of hands with the Holy Spirit

Acts 10:45 Then the circumcised believers who had come with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the gentiles, too.

The Gentiles were included to receive the Holy Spirit, it open the minds of the believers the Power that Jesus has.

Acts 10:46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,

Same thing happens at Pentecost, speaking in tongues and praising God

Acts 10:47 "No one can stop us from using water to baptize these people who have received the Holy Spirit in the same way that we did, can they?"

Peter said they are to be baptized in water.

Acts 10:48 So Peter ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus the Messiah. Then they asked him to stay there for several days.

The Gentiles were baptized in the name of Jesus, they had received the Holy Spirit.

Now, what about all thousands of those who had died believing in and their testimony about Jesus and the word of God in Africa, Middle East and rest of the world today.  Does Jesus recognize these individuals in their prayers and gifts to the poor.  I believe so.  The estimate about 100,000 are martyred every year, according google - BBC News.

Revelation 20:4 Then I saw thrones, and those who sat on them were given authority to judge. I also saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or hands. They came back to life and ruled with the Messiah for a thousand years.
