Looking at the Greek word for Philemon which means friendly which the Greek meaning for the word Onesimos is profitable. Paul told us that in the pass Onesimos was unprofitable or useless to Philemon in verse 11. Does that mean that when Onesimos was with Philemon, he had no use for Christianity and ran away from being a slave. How and when he was really converted would be an very interesting story. After his conversion, he became a very good help to Paul in service. Philemon must have been someone of means since he has slaves and guest rooms for Paul to stay at, but in his way of life as a Christian, he was friendly or someone who is kind. I believe this is one of the reason why requested that Philemon forgive Onesimos for what he had done to him. So, the Apostle us the meaning of their names in his letter to Philemon. Blessing
