Holy Spirit, an overview

Holy Spirit, an overview                                       February 11, 2017

How do we really cover this subject when the Holy Spirit is mention so many times in the Scriptures but yet does not explain what the Holy Spirit is? The Scriptures explains what it does.  There are so many views as there are people.    Personally, I do not believe we really know and the Scriptures are not really clear on this subject.

There are 95 verses that have the name “Holy Spirit” in the verse.

We know from many Old Testament Scriptures that God puts His Holy Spirit in many individuals we read and study about.  These verses happen before Pentecost.

One of the verses that we know about.  Who has the Holy Spirit?

Psalms 51:11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Isaiah 63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses and his people, saying: "Where is He who brought them up out of the sea With the shepherd of His flock? Where is He who put His Holy Spirit within them,

Luke 1:15 For he (John) will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

Luke 1:35  And the angel answered and said to her (Mary), "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

Luke 1:41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Luke 1:67 Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

Luke 2:25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.  (Temple)

John 20:22 And when He had said this, He (Jesus) breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.  (Upper room)

Act 2:2-4 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.  (3)  Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.  (4)  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.  (Pentecost)

The words “Spirit of the Lord” is listed 28 times in the Bible.  Here are 2 examples:

Judges 6:34 But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon; then he blew the trumpet, and the Abiezrites gathered behind him.

Isaiah 40:13 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, Or as His counselor has taught Him?

What do we really know about the Holy Spirit.  Let’s look at what the scriptures really say and explain to us what the Holy Spirit does.

We know the job description of the Holy Spirit is: He will teach us all things, and bring to our remembrance all thing

John 14:26 (Jesus words)  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

John 16:13 (Jesus words)  However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.  (14)  He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

Proverbs 1:23 Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.

Mark 13:11 (Jesus words)  But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.

Luke 4:1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

Luke 11:13 (Jesus words)  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"

Luke 12:10 (Jesus words)   "And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.

Acts 1:8 (Jesus words)  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

Acts 9:31 Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.

Ephesians 1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

2 Timothy 1:14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

Hebrew 2:4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

We found that the Holy Spirit is sent and available to teach us, to guide us, is a Helper for us, to rebuke us, to show us the way to unfold the Scriptures, to give us joy and peace and love, and to transform our lives and our character to the Way of Life that Jesus wanted for His body.

We know it is the Spirit of the Holy God and is in individuals.

The Spirit of the Lord is what the Father sends to combine the Holy Spirit with the Spirit in man, we become a new creation and children of God.

Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,  (17)  and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?  (17)  If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

1 Corinthians  2:10-12 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.  (11)  For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.  (12)  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

The Holy Spirit was sent to those who repent and after when Jesus was resurrected.

John 16:7-11 (Jesus words)  Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.  (8)  And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:  (9)  of sin, because they do not believe in Me;  (10)  of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;  (11)  of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

The term Seven Spirits of God appears four times in the Book of Revelation.   The meaning of the Seven Spirits of God has been interpreted in multiple ways.

Revelation 1:4   John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne,

This tells us the seven Spirits are before the Fathers and the Lords throne, from Him is Jesus.

We know that the Lord (Jesus) is setting at the right hand of the Father.

Romans 8:33-34 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.  (34)  Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Ephesians 1:20-21 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,

(21)  far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.

Colossians 3:1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.

Revelation 3:1 (Jesus words) "And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, 'These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: "I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.

This tells us the seven Spirits of God and a new thing, seven stars.

Revelation 4:5 And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

This tells us the seven Spirits of God are the seven lamps of fire burning before the throne.

Revelation 5:5-6  But one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals."  (6)  And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

We find that the seven horns and seven eyes are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

Since there are seven Spirits of God, each one is Holy, since they are from God and He sends them all out.

Does the book of Isaiah, names each Spirit, the seven Spirits of God.

Isaiah 11:1-2 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.  (2)  The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

Are these the Spirits of the Lord before the throne of God we just covered?

What are the results of the Holy Spirit in individuals (fruit).

This is how God see someone who has His Holy Spirit living in them and have become a new creation.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  (23)  gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Then again, this is how God see someone who “Does Not” have the Holy Spirit living in them and only have the spirit in man.

Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,  (20)  idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,  (21)  envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:3-11 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

(4)  There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.  (5)  There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.  (6)  And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

(7)  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:  (8)  for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

(9)  to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,  (10)  to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

(11)  But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

Instead of asking ourselves, what is the Holy Spirit, we need to look at what do we know about the Holy Scriptures.

What have we really learn from these Scriptures, here are just a few things

·      Father and Jesus gives the Holy Spirit

·      Holy Spirit is a Helper

·      Holy Spirit is a comforter

·      Holy Spirit fills us

·      Holy Spirit brings to our remembrance all thing

·      Holy Spirit guides us into all truth

·      Holy Spirit can be blaspheme

·      Holy Spirit seals

·      Holy Spirit can be grieve

·      Holy Spirit dwells in us

·      Holy Spirit has gifts

·      Holy Spirit in us, we are a new creation;

·      The seven Spirits before Gods throne,

·      There are seven Spirits of the LORD

·      Holy Spirit gives us different gifts

Remember, covering the Gospel of Mark, Mark shows what Jesus does, His work that He does, This is what we found about the Holy Spirit, its works and what it does.    Interesting comparison.
