Guardian Angels in the Scriptures: July 31, 2021: www.seachord.org

Guardian Angels in the Scriptures                 July 31, 2021

What can be found in the Scriptures regarding Guardian Angels?

We will find Guardians Angels are divine, created agents of God sent to protect and aid the Saints, Believers and their families on earth in times of need. They are mentioned throughout the Bible, coming to the support of God's people, the Saints.

First, important we realize, the term "guardian angel" is not found in the Scriptures.  Important to Know.  But we know Lord Jesus is our guardian:

Psalms 121:5 The LORD is your guardian; the LORD is your shade at your right side.

Guardian: word is shaw-mar means: Guardian, Keeper, watches used in other translations.  Jesus says He is our true guardian.

Shade: word means Defense, protector on right side.

Psalms 121:7-8 The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;  (8)  the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

So Jesus is our guardian, he uses angels to do this for us, each of His Saints, little children, and family members.

When were the angels created?

Job 38:4, 7 "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. (7)  while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

What can angels do, but carry out Jesus work, angel means messenger or agent.

Psalms 103:20-21 Bless the LORD, you angels who belong to him, you mighty warriors who carry out his commands, who are obedient to the sound of his words.  (21)  Bless the LORD, all his heavenly armies, his ministers who do his will.

Nehemiah 9:6 You alone are the LORD; You have made heaven, The heaven of heavens, with all their host, The earth and everything on it, The seas and all that is in them, And You preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You.

Let us revisit these verses:

Ezekiel 28:14 "You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; or You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you

Ezekiel 28:16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.

This could have two meanings:  spread his wings over Jesus throne and/or guardian over the earth which he was assigned as his responsibility.

There are two sections of verses in the New Testaments hints that we have a personal or assigned angels to each Saint and their families, for the sake of the Saint.  Why do I say this.

1 Corinthians 7:14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.  V. 12-16

Mark 10:16 And he {Jesus} took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.

·      By Jesus example, we, as the body of Jesus, bless the any new babies and other little children who haven’t been blessed.

·      The Blessing is for God to bless and protect the children and to bless the parents to teach their children the right way by obeying God’s laws because doing this will bring them blessings and happiness as they grow up.

·      Is this when angels are assigned to a baby, in the womb or before conception.

·      It seems all children receive an angel, until sometime in the future.

·      Is it because of the parents?  Becoming Saints, Believers or not.

·      Then as adults, Saints / Believers are the ones with angels.

·      Boys age 12 and girls age 13 are considered adults?

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

If we teach our children about Jesus when they are young, they might pull away from the faith for a period of time, they will return when they are older after having their own family and children.

But the problem I see, if our children go after other gods, then it is a problem for them and their family.

Deuteronomy 8:19-20 Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the LORD your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.  (20)  As the nations which the LORD destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.

Deuteronomy 6:14-15 You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are all around you  (15)  (for the LORD your God is a jealous God among you), lest the anger of the LORD your God be aroused against you and destroy you from the face of the earth.

Can they repent, of course they can repent, we know salvation is only by grace from the Father and nothing else.

The Apostle John tells us, that there is no other way:

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

So, what will happen to those who follow other gods, that is not for me to decide, that is what Lord Jesus will do, judge all individuals:

2 Timothy 4:1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:

John 5:22 The Father judges no one, but has given all authority to judge to the Son,

John 5:27 and he has given him authority to judge, because he is the Son of Man.

John 5:30 I can do nothing on my own accord. I judge according to what I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me."

·      There is so much non-Biblical and miss information about Guardian Angels on the internet.

·      We need to be careful.  What does the Word of God really, really say?

·      We are going to examine the Bible and see what it has to say about guardian angels.

There are many Scriptures that describe angels protecting, aiding, or delivering the Saints, let us see what we find and learn.

Are there many different and number of Angels Assigned to each of Us? Or Do We Have Personal Angels?

Matthew 18:10 "See to it that you do not despise one of these little ones, because I tell you, their angels in heaven always have access to my Father in heaven.

The word “their” certainly implies that these angels have a special personal role to play in relation to Jesus’s disciples. But the plural “angels” may simply mean that all believers have numerous angels assigned to serve them, not just one.  This verse support the idea that children has an angel.

·      Could be a Little child or new Believer.  All I can say is, us, long time believer has to be somewhat careful around a new Believer who is learning.

·      Jesus is saying that angels watch over and serve His Saints on earth.

·      Angels are actively involved in the lives of God’s people.

·      They have specific functions, and it is a blessing that God sends them to respond in our specific times of need.

·      One way God delivers us is through the ministry of angels.

·      They are on this Earth right now, having been sent to minister to our needs as an heir of salvation. The Bible tells us

Hebrews 1:13-14 But to which of the angels did he ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"?  (14)  All of them are spirits on a divine mission, sent to serve those who are about to inherit salvation, aren't they?   {Saints, who have the Holy Spirit in them}

·      All Angels are simply God’s servants who do his bidding for the sake of the Saints.

·      This means that everything angels do, everywhere in the world, at all times, is for the good of the Saints. All Angels are Guarding Angels.

·      An angel who does something by God’s assignment anywhere in the world is fulfilling the promise that God will work all things for the good of all Christians — everywhere

Because of this specific role in our lives, they can warn and protect us from harm.

Let us turn to Acts where an angel helps break the apostle out of prison.:

Acts 12:12-15 When Peter realized what had happened, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was also called Mark, where a large number of people had gathered and were praying.  (13)  When he knocked at the outer gate, a servant-girl named Rhoda came to answer it.  (14)  On recognizing Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that she didn't open the gate but ran back inside and announced that Peter was standing at the gate.  (15)  The other people told her, "You're out of your mind!" But she kept insisting that it was so. Then they said, "It's his angel."

This statement implies a belief in individual guardian angels being assigned to believers, in this case, the Apostle Peter.  Upper room, So one of the Mary in the Scriptures, is John Mark mother.

We know now that angels can be assigned to the Saints and that they can be in 3rd heaven and also can be on the Earth.

Interesting verse in Psalms 91.

·      Guardian angels are angels sent as protectors delivered by God to guard and fight for the Saints as from both, spiritual and physical harm.

·      There are many accounts where angels protected the life of someone.

The Scriptures tells us: Angels protect God’s people;

Psalms 91:11-12 for he will command his angels to protect you in all your ways.  (12)  With their hands they will lift you up so you will not trip over a stone.

Guarding Angels are there to help Jesus with His Saints. Maybe a small pebble, trails, stone is big things.

Psalms 91:14-16 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.  (15)  He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.  (16)  With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation."

Angels are active throughout the Old Testament for the sake of God’s people. For example:

·      Jesus protects the Saints who has the Holy Spirit in them and when they are in a time of trouble, physical, spiritual and mental trials.

·      Jesus appoints, sends, or commands an angel during our time of need.

·      Important, we love the Lord Jesus:  Notice the “I” rescue him, protect him, answer him, in trouble, deliver him, honor him, satisfy him.

Psalms 34:7 The angel of the LORD surrounds those who fear him, and he delivers them.

·      I know, technically does not say, Guarding Angels, but they are guarding angels.

·      We read, All angels are guarding angels.

·      But they are assigned to each of the Saints {you and me} to give help us to accomplish Jesus’s Will and protect us.

·      It may not be the same angel each time, but there is one around us.

How many angels could be around us at a time.  What about Elisha.

2 Kings 6:15 Meanwhile, the attendant to the man of God got up early in the morning and went outside, and there were the elite forces, surrounding the city, accompanied by horses and chariots! So Elisha's attendant cried out to him, "Oh no! Master! What will we do!?"

2 Kings 6:16-17 (16)  Elisha replied, "Stop being afraid, because there are more with us than with them!"  (17)  Then Elisha prayed, asking the LORD, "Please make him able to really see!" And so when the LORD enabled the young man to see, he looked, and there was the mountain, filled with horses and fiery chariots surrounding Elisha!

Jesus did not leave Elisha unprotected from his enemies

Daniel and his friends had protection and discussion many times over and over with angels.

Blazing Fire Furnace.

Daniel 3:25 "Look!" he told them, "I see four men walking untied and unharmed in the middle of the fire, and the appearance of the fourth resembles a divine being."   {Is this the Lord Jesus Himself?}

Daniel in the lion’s den: For Daniel’s protection, God sent His angel and he shut the mouths of lion.

Daniel 6:22 My God sent his angel and sealed the mouths of the lions. They have not harmed me, proving that I'm innocent before him. Also against you, your majesty, I've committed no offense."

Protection, bringing a reply for Daniel Prayer from Gabriel

Daniel 9:21-22 while I was still speaking, Gabriel the man of God whom I had seen in the previous vision, appeared to me about the time of the evening offering.  (22)  He gave instructions, and this is what he spoke to me: 'Daniel, I've now come to give you insight and understanding.

Daniel 10:13 However, the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for 21 days. Then, look! Michael, one of the chief angels, came to assist me. I had been detained there near the kings of Persia.

Angels are not omnipresent, had to come to Daniel and Michael would not have to help out Gabriel, finite, limited to one place at one time.

Daniel 12:1 "'At that time Michael will arise, the great prince who will stand up on behalf of your people, and a time of trouble will come like there has never been since nations began until that time. Also at that time, your people will be delivered—everyone who will have been written in the book.

So Israel had a Guardian Angel for protection

Philip and the Eunuch

Acts 8:26 Now an angel of the Lord told Philip, "Get up and go south on the road that leads from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a deserted road."

Did we have angels as guests

Hebrews 13:2 Stop neglecting to show hospitality to strangers, for by showing hospitality some have had angels as their guests without being aware of it.

This angel would have killed Balaam, following orders

Numbers 22:33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared it."  {donkey was trying to protect his owner?  dogs]

How many angels are there

Revelation 5:11 Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels, the living creatures, and the elders surrounding the throne. They numbered 10,000's times 10,000 and thousands times thousands.

We are not to worship angels

Revelation 19:10 I bowed down at his {angel} feet to worship him, but he told me, "Don't do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers who rely on what Jesus is saying. Worship God, because what Jesus is saying is the spirit of prophecy!"

Colossians 2:18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.

Interesting, Women, guarding angels?  Very controversial subject.

Zechariah 5:9 Then I looked up to see two women coming forward with the wind filling their wings. (They had wings like those of a stork.) They took up the basket, holding it between the earth and sky.

Could this be where people believe storks brings babies?  Who knows.

Jesus is temped by Satan

Matthew 4:11 So the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to him.

Angels are Powerful

Matthew 28:2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

During our lives on earth, we are lower than the angels

Hebrews 2:7 You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor

When we are changed, we will be raised higher than the angels.

1 Corinthians 6:3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

John the Baptist parents

Luke 1:13 But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.

Mary and Joseph

Luke 1:26-27 In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, (27) to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary.

Angels told the Shepherds

Luke 2:15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."

Angel to Joseph to leave, protected them

Matthew 2:13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."

Angel told Joseph to return back to Israel, {Gabriel?}

Matthew 2:19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt

Angels watch us, spectacle means “theater.”  Angels gain knowledge through observing our activities. They watch how we handle things.

1 Corinthians 4:9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display in last place, like men condemned to death. We have become a spectacle for the world, for angels, and for people to stare at.

Do guardian angels help to fight off demons

James 4:7 Therefore, submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you.

Guardian Angels encourages the Saints

God loves us so much that He sends His angels to guard, guide and protect us through various stages of our life. Although we may not immediately know or see that angels are around us, they are there at God’s direction and working to assist us in this life and the next.

Just as the angels are largely unseen by us, so also is their work.  When we are changed and see the angels, we will be amazed at all the things Jesus did through His angels, including their protection over us in times of danger, both physical, moral and spiritual danger as well.

We are not to worship angels or give them too much attention, because Jesus alone is the source of our salvation, not angels.  They are there to watch over you and me.

There are so many other examples that can be used.  Remember,

Hebrews 1:14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

The Saints and Believers.  That is, you and me.  We have many angels.
